Resection Recovery Time

I am scheduled to have a second resection on the 24th of this month. I asked the nurse that called me what kind of recovery time I was looking at before I could return to work, and she said 6-8 weeks. This really seems pretty extreme to me. I remember being up and back to normal within a couple weeks of my last resection. My job doesn't involve any physical labor, and the most difficult part would be standing for 8 hours a day, but I could have a chair if I needed one.

For those of you who have had resections in the past what kind of recovery time did you have? How long before you went back to work? I was hoping for 2-4 weeks before returning to work.

If you have it via laproscope you might have a 2-4 week recovery. But I had two open resections and my recoveries were 8 weeks each time. By the way, I have a desk job, and there is no way I could have gone back sooner. I hope you don't push yourself too hard and go back too soon.

Think its different for everyone. I had an open resection when I was 24. I was in the hospital for 9 days, home for 2-3 weeks, then back to work. When I went back I started slowly couple half days a week.

I had an open resection and was in the hospital for 5 days and off work for 5 weeks.

I had resection (not lapro), and was back at work in two weeks. I have any easy desk job, no physical labor. I was still healing of course, but I could sit at work as well as on my couch. It's 5 weeks now and I'm completely better. Don't take any more medication than you need to, that helps. Best wishes!

I had Emerg Resection on October 9th - and after 6 days in the hospital. I feel amazing. I still can't lift anything more than 10 pounds but otherwise. I am good to go! I stopped all pain meds the day after surgery. To me the pain was worst before the surgery.

I had emergency resection and was in hospital for 12 days with the lower 6 inches of an 18 inch incision open and being packed with guaze daily due to infection for another month and was back to work full time after only 4 weeks total off. I work a desk job. It was still hard and very exhausting but didn't have much choice.

I just wanted to add a comment here.  I think people all recover differently, as expressed in your responces.  But the average hospital stay is 5 to 7 days.  And average recovery period is 4 to 6 weeks.  I like mojowo4 had an infection in my incision both times, so my average time off each time was 8 weeks. 

Please be sure to take the time off YOU need.  This is major surgery and it can take time to recover from.  Some folks are so bad before, that once they had their surgeries they felt so much better, that even surgical pain was better than what they suffered with before. 

I work a desk job, and believe me there was still no way I could have gone back sooner.  In fact I kept telling my family I felt like I was never gonna get better, but of course I did.  After your surgery one of the things that helps most of us, is to walk and walk and walk some more.  It starts to get things moving quicker.  Expect some D afterwards for awhile, as it takes sometime for your intestines to adjust to the surgery.  Usually gets better within time.

You are right about feeling so good that even the surgerical pain was better. That is me. Sad huh. It is so hard to slow down when you are use to running but I am trying. The last thing I want is do have this happen again. You advice was right - walking is the best meds as well as resting. It will take 8 weeks to heal and I am not going to rush it. Thank you again for your post

I just had a resection 5 weeks ago, and I could have been back at work after 3 weeks (5 days in the hospital). But the fourth week I started feeling worse, and I don't think I can go back yet. I see the surgeon tomorrow and I'm going to ask for 2 more weeks. Pain is still there, worse than before the surgery, but I am feeling better than I did before. I figure the Imuran is just causing it to take a long time to heal. They did a CT Scan last week with blood work, all normal. I guess everyone is just different.
