Remission with Fistula & Fissures? Possible??

I am extremely confused.  I have not had any abdominal symptoms (i.e. diarrhea & cramps) for about 2-3 months but I still have my fistula which I have had for over a year and my fissures which I have had since June.  My fistula has been great.  I have not really had much pain since my major pains were from going to the bathroom.  My fissures have improved about 75% from what they were. I overall feel the best that I have in my entire life!  Is this remission or do all my symptoms have to be gone?  I would like to start trying for a baby in January but I am worried that this might not be the right time.

Hello!  Wow!  I've never heard anyone say "My fistula has been great"! :-)   Have you been to the doctor lately to see how things are healing?   Fissures can take a long time to heal.  Remission in the clearest sense means the CD isn't causing your body to continue to attack itself.  Glad to hear you are feeling better!

I would definitly have a colonoscopy prior to trying for a baby especially having a fistula. My Sx were supposed to hopefully get me in remission and I was supposed to have a scope in December 07 to make sure all was being controlled with meds. Unfortunately as you know I havent had the luck that most have post op and I am having that scope in Deecmeber but it is to see how much more of my intestines have to be removed when the area where the fistula is gets removed.

I never thought I would be able to say that since those suckers cause soo much pain but it doesn't bother me unless I have a flare. I am going to the bathroom once a day and I don't even know it's there. I just had a scope in June and the dr. doesn't want to repeat it until a year and a half from now. MY GI won't give me clearance to have a baby unless my colo surgeon does. My colo surgeon won't give me clearance because she wants to put in a fistula plug first and with that plug I have to have to start Remicade. If I start the remicade she won't give me the ok to have a baby because she doesn't think that there is enough research on the long term effects of the baby. So i'm pretty much up a creek without a paddle. I am in a circle that doesn't even seem to end. I figure if i can get pregnant now that my intestines are under control and I am not in pain then I can have my baby and after a few months have the plug put in and start remicade. I dont have to wait around years for everyone else to decide that it's ok. I am young but my husband is 16 years older than I am and I don't want to have my first baby when he's 50! (this is all God willing ofcourse!)

I don't understand your doctor not wanting you to have a baby on Remicade. There have been so many Remicade and Imuran babies born to mom's on this board. Maybe you need to find another OB/GYN that has a little more progressive thinking.

As for the fissure, I think I would let that heal first before trying. You tend to have alot of pressure on that area when pregnant and giving birth.

I just saw a Dr. at Mt. Sinai last week. I have a fistula and I am on remicade and it does not seem to be healing. Well, it seems that my former Dr. should have put me on an antibiotic with the remicade because my seton drain and fistula are infected.

I have been trying to get pregnant for 6 months with no luck and the Dr. told me that I probably won't with an active infection in my body because babies don't like infection. So I guess if you have an infection in your body,you might not be able to get pregnant.

BTW, I will not be able to deliver naturally because I am a mess down there so it would be a scheduled c-section so I don't think your fissure would have an affect if you have a c-section. It just may get more sore as the baby grows.....

This is so frustrating!! Yes many women have had perfect babies but my doctor is looking at the future. No one knows what the long term effects are. There is no guarentee that my fistula will heal with remicade so what if it doesn't and I have the fistula for another 5 years...am I not supposed to have a baby till i'm perfect?? I feel good now...I can handle being pregnant now, 3 months ago I couldn't. People have fissures for years that don't heal. I am going on 6 months and all I can do is wait it out and see. If I didn't have the fissures or the fistula then I would say that I feel perfect. So because I have them I might not be able to get pregnant because of infection? I have been on antibiotics and while they did work great for a month I developed and neuropathy on my feet. The only option they are giving me is remicade! I want to hold of on remicade as long as I can. I am controlling it with just the pentasa and am doing great. Once I get on Remicade i will be on it for as long as my body can take it and then its off to something else. I am just so tired of a million different versions and no one doctor can give me a straight answer!!!! AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My Dr. in Albany does not want me to have a baby because I am on remicade but the Dr. at Mt. Sinai said he doesn't see a problem. He said,like anything,you are taking a chance. I mean it has only been FDA approved for 9 years or so and there are no long term studies. It is a choice you have to make. It's not fair that we can't have normal lives but we just have more to worry about....
