sharp searing pain in upper center of abdomen

hey guys i've been gone for a while due to having fistomomy surgery but i'm back again  =]

new problem though....twice last night i was laying on the couch and all of a sudden I had throw up in my mouth, i didn't burp or anything, it was just there.  not extreme amount or anything, it was like when that happens when you burp and a little comes up but without the burping.   Now this morning i woke up with terrible searing sharp pain in the center of my abdomen right in between the bottom of where your rib cage meets.   it's pretty bad and i'm doubled over.  i've had a bit of gas this moring too so i don't know if the pain is from that or not but it hasn't gone away let.  can anyone let me know what this could be?  thanks

I was having that same pain last year.. It feels like someone is stabbing you in the stomache right?? My doc thought it was a stomache ulcer, she gave me some meds for it but i wasn't totally convinced it was an ulcer,she said "sounds like it could be an ulcer" so i didn't take the meds, it got better in about a week..

Hmmm- sounds like a classic case of acid reflux to me! Try sticking to low sugar and low acid foods, elevate your head at night and report this to your doctor. There a many inexpensive drugs available that neutralize the stomach acid for this condition and you would not want to do damage to your esophagus or stomach from long term acid reflux especially since you seem to be prone to fistulas. As for me....couldn't live without my nexium. I don't get the reflux just a continuous burning fireball in my stomach. I have CD where the stomach empties into the small intestines as well. Should the doctor put you on this class of drugs I would recommend you take it first thing in the morning about an hour before anything else hits your mouth. Also, be careful to note if you feel this class of drugs interferes with your absorbtion of any other of your CD meds. Some have had problems in this area but I have not. Until your doctor gets back to you, the low sugar/low acid foods should help a whole lot! Good Luck!

Oooh, I get that pain every so often, feels like daggers being thrown right into my diaphragm. Not sure if it feels like this for you, but mine will come in "waves" - it'll just render me completely useless, for about 5-10 minutes, then abate for a few minutes, then return, over the course of a few hours.

It could be acid reflux, but I think it could also be an esophageal spasm. Your esophagus enters through the diaphragm (the big muscle "covering" your innards) just below your xiphisternal junction, which is where your ribs meet below your sternum. When a spasm occurs, you get uncontrolled contractions in the muscles surrounding the esophagus at that entrance to the diaphragm, and it just hurts like crazy. You'll know that's what it is because no medication will seem to touch the pain (unfortunately). I always just have to ride it out; lame, I know. It hurts so bad.

It would probably be a good idea to mention this and see if you need a scope to look for stomach ulcerations, but if those come up clear, the esophageal spasm is one possibility.

yeah actually when i was diagnosed 3 years ago they did a scope and i had the crohn's in my stomach and duodeum....maybe i need another scope down there again.  I too have had the pain before but it's been a long time.  thankfully it's gone now.  i'm definetely going to mention it to the doc next time i go in.
