Surgery for what can become a fistula

Hi,

I went to the doctor and he said that it looks like I may need surgery as he is scared that it will become a fistula that attaches to my big intestine. As anyone experience that before?? I need some advice. Isn't there any medicine i can take for that.

I have had cronh for now almost 9 year and have been on pentasa since and when i have a bad attact i take Cipro which has now only once this year and because i went to the caribean!!

I woud definitly get a second opinion. I have to have surgery for my fistula but that is because I have exhausted all other methods for it healing otehr ways. I would definitly wonder since it is not a fistula yet how does the doc know it will lead to one? I had a fistula from 1 intestine to the other and had no idea it was there and the medical tests did not show it was there they only found it when they had to do surgery bfor my ileum which perforated.

I would make the docs try remicade or humira since they are also used to help heal fistulas. Antibiotics such as cipro and flagyl are also known to help heal fistulas. Anotehr method of trying to make it heal which is the last step prior to surgery is have TPN and avoid all food except clear liquids. My old GI kept putting things off not believeing I was in a flare when medical tests showed that I was whether my CD would have progressed as it did whether or not he was more aggressive I dont know and never will but I believe there are options especially since they have not tried anything and are jumping to surgery especially since there is no fistula at this point in time
