Not Pnuemonia, now maybe a reaction to the anitbiotic. Dang!

Got home late last night after 7 hours in the ER. Not really feeling any better, but at least I knew I didn't have pnuemonia. Went to get undressed and WOW, I'm covered in red, bumps! I had one spot under my eye, that both my daughter and husband had commented on, but I hadn't seen. And I had one spot on my little finger that had started the day before which I had a bandaid over (I thought I had burned it or something). So, over night they have gotten much worse, they are coming to heads and looking just lovely. Oh and more are popping up every moment! As my husband so nicely said, pretty soon, you won't be able to go out in public! Don't you think the doctor should consider a drug reaction in a person who isn't coughing, has no signs of pnuemonia but can't breathe, and has a huge red welt thing on her face. I've done nothing but research the signs of a reaction since I got up this morning. I think I'm having almost all of them.

So, I'll be calling my doctors office as soon as they open. I'm sure they'll send me back to the ER, since he doesn't work on Mondays and they don't like to treat emergencies. Oh joy!

As Rosanne Rosannadanna used to say, "It's always something." I hope whatever it is, there's a quick fix for it. Keep us posted.

They don't know what the rash is so they sent you home? Nice. I hope you get some answers at the dermatologists. Keep us updated.

Did they give you any meds or advice for the breathing difficulty? It sure sounds like an allergic reaction to me too! It's true that they often give steroids for allergic reacitons, so I wonder if that can help. I sure hope you feel better. Thanks for your advice for me too. (mucus thread) I think I'm getting sick...now I have a headache and chills and overall lousy. I have three more hours to work...can't wait to go home! Take care of yourself!

it too does sound like an allergic reaction to me. When I went to the hosptial in 1999 I had symptoms of menegitis but it was actually my gall bladder ready to burst it was the Imuran that I was on masking the symptoms of the real problem. I was given an IV bag with 5 things in it. I was able to rule out a couple of the things in it. There wre 3 I was unsure of they were compazine, ceftriaxone, and vancomycin. This year I was vigen vanco very slowly to ensure I was not allergic to it while trying to kill one of the 5 bacterias growing in the abscess I had. I was on Pred at the time so I had no reaction so I had them remove that from my allergy list.

I was hospitalized with a septic picc line inmid November. They asked about the vanco and I forgot that they slowed the infusion down back in the spring. The night I was waiting for a room I got the infusion at the regular rate with no issues. The next morning I got my 2nd infusion of it. I sat up scratched my stomach then looked at it I had what is termed "drug rash" I had a similar rash while at home while on the TPN but I have been on that and everything else before with no issues. I informed the nurse about the rash which appeared at the end of the vanco infusion.

They gave me benadryl and they said they were going to give me the infusion later that day but slow down the drip as I had it done b4 at the other hospital and they were going to give me oral benadryl before starting the infusion. I was getting the infusion I went to the bathroom, called my nurse into my room my iv site which was in my jugular vein was turning red. The nurse rubbed her finger over it and it was itchy so she gave me additional benadryl IV. Nurses changed shifts and I called the nurse again the area was begining to hurt and then swell. I was surprised since when I had a reaction in 1999 I had breathing trouble and no skin issue as far as I know.

The moron resident still wanted me on the med even though it swelled so much that it blew my vien and I am hard to get a vein on...lets just say my other jug vein blew on the ER doc. A nurse got a vein in my wrist hand area. Again I was told you are going to get it we will give u IV benadryl this time...told him I did and it got worse after the benadryl still.

He said I want to see if u have a reaction next time. I pushed my nurse button to informe her my wrist was getting red and blotchy and swelling a little I was told my nurse was in another patients room I said I am having a drug allergic reaction. My mom 45 minutes later found my nurse NO ONE ever told her about it. I was given the infusion an additional 2 times in that vein even tho my wrist swelled to almost 2 times its size and it was red. After the last vanco infusion b4 I was discharged they d/c me from all fluids but kept the IV in for pain meds since no one ever wrote for oral dilaudid. The dilaudid ended up going subQ since the vein had blown again. That was what happened with most of that jugular infusion the vein blew and most of the AB went subQ.

GRRRRRRRRRR I hate residents who dont listen to the patient. I have found some good ones in the bunch I think the others need to listen to patients who know what the heck is going on with their own body since they have been going through some of these things for years

I just think we should all be given honorary medical degrees. It seems to me we have to know more than our doctors or they would end up killing us! I'm just sitting tight until I get the biopsy back, but I'm not taking anymore of that antibiotic. I had to drop something off at a friends house yesterday and she saw all my welts. She developed the same reaction later in life to the same antibiotic. So maybe I'm not so crazy!
