Generic for Pentasa

Does anyone know if there is a generic equivalent yet for Pentasa? My presciption calls for 8 500mg pills each day. My health insurance changed at the beginning of this year so in order for me to get the first three month supply it is going to cost me $825.00.

The manufacturer if Pentasa has a patient assistence program. Don't know the particulars on who qualifies but you might ask your GI's office about this:

Shire Patient Assistance Program: Physicians or their representatives who would like to enroll patients in Shire’s Patient Assistance Program may call 1-866-325-8224 for enrollment applications and additional information.

As of yet there is no generic available. It takes approx. 10 yrs. if memory serves me correct for the patent to expire on a name brand before a generic becomes available.

Ask your doctor if they have samples they can give you. Each time I visit my GI I leave with a huge bag full of Pentasa samples, and I only have to buy my drugs about once a year (very good, because my insurance doesn't cover prescriptions!) Good luck!

If there is not a huge call for the drug them may not make a generic. I was on Pentasa for years...I'm sure the manufacturer is out of the 10 year umbrella...but alas, there is not generic.

My bottle says Mesalamine. Then, under that it says Brand Name Pentasa, but the pills inside have Pentasa stamped on them. I don't get it! Is it like acetaminophen is Tylenol? I guess so if there is no generic. We do pay an arm and a leg for this stuff!!!!
