I am 30 weeks pregnant and have maintained my course of Asacol and 6MP thus far with no flares.  The big question now is whether or not 6MP passes through breast milk to the baby.  Anyone have any expereince with this?  I seem to get conflicting answers including "its contraidicated but it should be ok eventhough we have no data."  I'm a scientist and I read as many journel articles as I can get my hands on - and there seems to be no concrete data that it is ok.  Your feedback is appreciated!  For now I'm looking to bottle feed -most people my age I know have been bottle fed and we all turned out fine!

I have read/heard that 6mp is contraindicated for nursing. I have not nursed while taking it and probably would not based on the info I have found. If you feel good about bottle feeding then go for it.  All baby formula is regulated by the FDA and has the nutrients that babies need. So, no need to buy the $$$$ stuff. The walmart or target brands are just as good and half the price!

Stef - thanks for the feedback.  Dr. Hale's quote was sent to me by the La Leche League and it was what I had the biggest problem with.  His answer is very wish washy and I don't understand how a physcian can find a drug concerning (due to its physical characteristics) and acceptable all in one breath and then continue to say "far far less" in nursing than pregnancy "eventhough there is no data."  I also figure formula is more advanced now than it was 34 years ago - and I'd rather be safe and bottle feed than take a risk that may lead to extreme guilt later.

Not that my opinion matters because after all, YOU are the mom, but I think you have made a wise decision. It's such a fine line that we walk sometimes when we are trying to balance our health and do the best for our babies. Formula IS more advanced (has been regulated since 1994, not that I'm a huge fan of the FDA) and your baby will be just fine on formula. Dr. Hale's response is wishy-washy and without more concrete data, I'd go the route of formula too. I hope the next 10 weeks are smooth sailing for you! :)
