My friend had surgery Thursday. Her husband and I spoke Thursday night. he was operating on no sleep, and I don't totally understand Crohns, so I didn't completely follow everything he said, but this is the gist of what happened. when the surgeons opened her up they found a raging infection in one of her fallopian tubes. her colon had somehow tried to block the infection (this is where I get a bit confused) by wrapping itself around the fallopian tube, so the surgeons had to detach the colon from the tube. in the process, the colon perforated slightly, so she has a temp. ileostomy for at least 6 weeks while the colon heals. the fallopian tube had been destroyed by the infection and had to be removed. obviously this was unanticipated and my friend is quite upset.
the doctors speculate that the infection was actually just the type of general bacterial infection that all of us fight all the time but because of her prolonger remicade (and now humira) treatments, her body couldn't fight it effectively.
I am planning on visiting her tomorrow if she is up for it. I suspect it will be a hard visit, as she really wants kids, and while she still can, the loss of a fallopian tube obviously makes that harder. also, she has had an ilieostomy before and really hated it. it's very sad.
