Rules on Remicade and sickness

It's probably the sinusitis, not the antibiotic, that might hold up the Remicade.  My GI had me on Cipro and Flagyl for my first 3 infusions with no problem.  But they always ask if I've been sick or felt like I might be coming down with something.  If the answer is yes they won't give it to me.

Snappy - I once got a bad, bad upper respiratory infection that then developed into pneumonia. I was scheduled for an infusion and showed up hacking and feverish with congested lungs. They prescribed a Z-pack and we rescheduled for one week later. I still had URI symptoms like a cough when I returned for my infusion. Since I had been on antibiotics and responded, they went ahead and gave me the infusion.

It would seem that the infusion people would delay until you finished the course of antibiotics (10 days?) or until they felt you were no longer at increased risk. Since your infusion is 10 days after your likely start of antibiotics, it's a close call. Call your infusion people and ask.

PS - If you are having chronic sinusitis, I would certainly consider that Remicade might be the culprit. It is know to cause this problem in a small percentage of Remicade recipients. I certainly would discuss this with your doctor on Tuesday.

I had my remicade postponed because I was on an antibiotic for an infection. They made me wait 10 days after I finished it. I guess it depends how strict your providers are.

i think the reason some docs make u wait until ur done w/antibiotics is to ensure that what ever infection you are being treated for is out of ur system. You can take antibiotics and be on remicade, but its dangerous to have an infection as our immune system is signifacantly lowered from the remicade. I developed a staph infection once and ended up in the hospital for two weeks! remicade hadnt worked the same since
