Sorry, I haven't posted in a long time, but now I have a new issue I'd like to explore...Obviously, many people with Crohn's have problems being too thin, but I'm about 100 pounds overweight, and I know there are others on this site that also have that problem from a previous post.  I am looking into bariatric/weight loss surgery, and while I realize that that is not usually recommended for people with Crohn's, I was wondering if there were any people on here who had had it done and how you fared/are faring, both Crohn's-wise and weight-wise.  Any responses would be appreciated.  Thanks.

With crohns bariatric bypass is ruled out - too risky, but they will conceder lap-band proceedure. I was going down this path last year, it's even covered by my insurance co., did the upper GI - then havn't heard from them...... and I haven't followed up since, due to problems with infections this past year and don't feel like taking any chances with my life right now...... and been wondering if it would be worth it and work - i can go on a diet and gain weight!!!!!! think it's the crohns and where scarring is, has body thinking it's going thru famine and is trying to 'save' me...... makes me wonder if I would gain even more weight with surgery????

Hello to both of you.  The overweight issue rules many of our lifes..........mine is connected to my Antidepressants..........hard to know if I want to be thin and depressed or chubby and still depressed over the weight gain..............I guess in all things we have to look at what is best for our bodies and our mental health.

I have looked at the lap band (which can be waivered with IBD), but that will not address the ortho injurys that are causing me to be obese. If I can get those resolved enough by June, and see what I can do from there...

My Gi said that "No self respecting surgen will do any sort of barriatric surgery on a Crohn's patient." I am almost 200 pound over weight. I am trying Curves. I am on the high protien diet. There is also a high carb diet and a vegan diet available. I lost 13 pouns in the first 2 weeks, but that is unusual they said. I haven't lost more that a pound or two since. I have a hard time sticking to the diet change. I have been doing the work outs though. Days when I feel sick or super tired are the hardest. Good Luck!

I had gastric bypass 5 years ago but al the time only had dignosis of ibs though my mom had cron's. I have had my share of complications many not related to cron's. overall i am very happy with results and my ibs symptoms have been less since my bypass than before i think due to weight loss. but in the last year i have been very anemic and needed a blood transfution i was just diagnosed with cron's in december. I guess i am saing you realy need to look at the pro's and cons the complications are real and i have gotten off easy i think. i hope this helps you in making a desition. laniebug
