extremely sluggish colon

Im posting here because it seemed to be the closest fit. My apologies if this offends anyone.

THE CONTROVERSY:

My Colon is always full and distended. Without Mirilax all activity stops and my insides turn to dried glue.

It was not always this way.

Before I received an appendectomy 3 years ago, I was the most 'regular' guy in the room. Directly following surgery, I never regained normal bowel function. They said it would return. It never did.

Now they are saying this could not have been caused by the surgery. I am just desperate now and asking for any ideas people might have.

1) Anyone know or have a theory of why this might have happeded to me? Such as ingesting toxins, bacteria, poison that would cause colon to lose motility?

2) Could this lead to other conditions such as Crohn's, Colon Cancer, IBS?

3) Anyone else out there who experienced this problem? And if so what caused it? Has it improved over time?

Hello, I agree with Mike, an appointment with a GI would most likely be of help to you.

I have a sluggish colon and was dx with IBS so I have to take a lot of fiber product.

my granddaughter had this, and she had to have a colonoscopy and biopsies to dx why. they can check for nerves, cells of any kind, (hers was milk protein allergy) and advise appropriate measures to help the issue.

sometimes, for unknown reasons, a bowel will do this when its messed with too much. esp in gunshots, etc. it just doesnt ever wake up/ some may say the surgery had nothing to do with it, they may be right or not. a biopsy will tell. i certainly wouldnt pay much attention to that...they may not ever be able to prove why this happened. and again, a colonoscopy might show the reason.

keep searching. miralax was the only way my grand could go for many years. and constipation is truly dangerous if its bad enough.

Are you on any probiotics (good bacteria)? Align, VSL3, etc are some good examples. Or good home made yogurt. I think probiotics can help with IBS symptoms and with regularity.

Also, what about fiber supplements? I think they help with both Diarrhea and constipation.

I agree a colonoscopy will help answer some questions. If it is IBS, I would start taking some good probiotics (start slow on them) and metamucil (start slow here too), and see if that helps.

I used to have a wonderful gut which was regular and never suffered discomfort etc and in the past 3-4 years it has become SOOOOooooo sluggish...to the point I cant eat anything hard because it drags the whole way through and I look 6 months pregnant from the bloating with all the usual side effects.

I have had crohn's for a decade and only really suffered this in the past few years and dont know why...but our body's do change so you just have adjust best you can and ask your GI.

Good luck it is so annoying and I have had the years of chronic d and I would much prefer d to constipation and sluggish gut any day but thats just me.
