Long Term Side Effects of Imuran

My question is for those of you who have been on Imuran for any length of time, what kind of side effects did you get from it?  I'm starting to have aches and pains in my arms and some very random needle like pains in my legs and feet.

My doctor put me on Imuran a couple of months ago and said I might be on it for a couple of years as long as it works for me.  It is doing wonders for my D.  I went from having 10-15 BM a day to having about 3-5 a day which I consider a miracle.

I have not noticed any real side effects from the Imuran. Sorry I could not be of more help.

The primary side effects of Imuran and 6mp (essentially the same medications) are suppression of white blood counts, liver toxicity and nausea. The symptoms you report are not listed as side effects for those drugs that I can find. Most people do very well on both drugs and get good benefits from them -- I think the side effect ratio is something under 10%.

I've been on 6mp for more than 10 years, I don't have any side effects except that I can't take a high enough dose to get me to the therapeutic level with out my toxic level going too high. So as long as I keep to 50mg, my bloodwork seems OK, and I've been doing better. My doctors think that even though I'm not taking a therapeutic level its still helping.

The side effects you mention could be nothing, or unrelated. However, they also could be a sign of something up with your liver/kidneys. Call you doctor report the side effects and have lliver function and kidney tests done. Then you get total peace of mind.

I was on it for 3 years. No side effects. I stopped taking it because I had elevated liver levels.

I've been on imuran for almost a year. I haven't had any side effects except nausea. I had those pains and feelings in my legs before i started the medication. So i feel mine is unrelated to the medicine. i would talk to your dr

Thanks for all of the responses. I have an appointment with my Gastro next month so I'll wait and see how things are going by then. I'm taking 100MG a day and have been on it for a little over 2 months now.

I was on 100MG/Day for a year and have been on 50MG/Day for over 2 years now.
I haven't noticed any bad things from it. I had joint pain prior and still have some, but I don't relate that to the Imuran as much as I do to CD itself.
