Anyone taken Meloxicam before?

Ok, I went to see the Rheumatologist today and I told him about how my GI wants solid proof I have Crohn's but my Internist thinks I have early Crohn's.  Anyhow, he gave me a prescription for Meloxicam because he wants to get me off the Prednisone.  I was reading about Meloxicam and it says it is an NSAID.  IF I DO have Crohn's, won't that aggravate it and make it worse?  I am scared to start taking it to be honest!  I have avoided Ibuprofen like the plague because when they did my scopes my TI ulcers were from either Crohn's or Ibuprofen--they have no idea which one.  I was going to have more testing done but my Internist thinks the GI's mind is basically "made up" and further testing would not benefit me.  I HAVE thought about trying a different GI, just for a second opinion, but I honestly do not want to be scoped again.  sad

Here are three good websites that give information on scleritis; it looks like there are four types. Has your ophthalmologist told you which type you have?

There's a whole slew of conditions related to scleritis. What has your rheumatologist tested you for?

"Causes: Scleritis coexists with a serious systemic disease in almost one half of cases; the underlying problem is frequently a connective tissue disorder.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in almost one third of patients suffering from scleritis.
  • Other connective tissue diseases seen with scleritis include the following:
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
    • Polyarteritis nodosa
    • Ankylosing spondylitis
    • Wegener granulomatosis
    • Relapsing polychondritis
    • Sarcoidosis
  • Additional maladies that may accompany scleritis include the following:
    • Syphilis
    • Post herpes zoster ophthalmicus
    • Tuberculosis
    • Gout
    • Lyme disease
    • Foreign body
    • Hypertension   ............."

As far as using Meloxicam, I'd say yes, it could cause ulcers in your colon and/or terminal ileum. There are tons of abstracts on PubMed related to nsaid use and lower GI problems.

Thank you so much for the websites, Jan!

My Opthamologist said I have Nodular Scleritis.  Oh man!  I have been tested for:

Rheumatoid Arthritis (last year when it all started, and it was negative, but my Rhemy checked again yesterday), Lupus, pretty much all the others in the first list (I had an Xray and blood test for Ankylosing Spondlytis yesterday), and a few others on the second list.  I have not been checked for Gout, TB, Lyme Disease--could my Internist check for these, do you think?

I have also had ESR, RPR, ANA, ANCA, etc. blood tests run as well.  Maybe I will be "lucky" and be one of those that fall into the 50% or whatever it is, of people who have Scleritis for no reason???  :-)

Anyhow, I am going to call my Internist today and tell her what the Rheumy put me on before I take it.  Whether I have Crohn's or not, I obviously should avoid NSAIDS regardless.
