Difficulty passing stools/constipation/Stricture.....

Hello everyone!  It's been a long time since I've posted but I "visit" every day.  My last colonoscopy in August revealed a stricture.  My GI said I don't need surgery yet.... That being said, I may go a day or two with passing no stool, then the next morning it seems like I can't stop going.  It is never diarrhea.  Sometimes it's formed, other times it is very narrow.  The urge to bear down on the toilet is unbearable.  Sometimes I feel like I am going to pass out.  Then, I'm exhausted for the rest of the day.  Is there anything I can do for some "normalcy?"  Supplements, dietary, fiber, laxatives?  Would increasing the Imuran help?  Thanks so much for any suggestions you may have.  Julie

I dont have an answer to your question... but your symptoms kinda jumped out at me. I was diagnosed with UC but lately have been going thru a flare and reading up alot on UC and Crohns. Sometimes I feel like I have more symptoms of Crohns than of the UC, especially while I am flaring. My bms are usually not diarrhea but have been getting very skinny and thin looking. Also, I have abdominal pain all the time since this flare began rather than off and on pain. I am waiting for an appt with my specialist... do you have much abdominal pain with the stricture?

Are you taking Calcium supplements those will constipate you something awful.

Hi Julie

      I to have constipation and very narrow stools, My Gi told me to take miralax 2x daily and to add fiber to my diet.Being constipated is not something I ever thought I would have to worry about!!

Pooie, no, I don't get much abdominal pain, thank goodness.

SugarMarie, I don't take Calcium, although I probably should being on Prednisone.

ALI9, I have Miralax at home from my last Colo.  Maybe I'll try some.  I could certainly add more fiber to my diet.

Ingrid, that's a very good suggestion.  I'm so bad with drinking water.  I don't drink enough during the day.  I need to increase my fluid intake.  Thanks so much!  Julie

If you are anything like me, it isn't an issue that the stool is not soft - it just has a problem getting through the stricture. I would be careful about taking anything without checking with the doctor first. I'm not 100% sure more fibre is the answer. I find when I have a stricture that a low residue diet is the way to go. But, again, check with your doctor first.
