A LOT Of Bleeding After Deep C-Scope Biopsies... Help!!!

Okay, I haven't noticed bleeding for a while, but had a colonscopy so the GI could do biopsies & decide between CD or UC. She said everything looked normal on the scope, so she took a lot of really deep biopsies hoping something would show on the pathology report. She said she had to use a different tool that they normally don't use. I was told I would have bleeding.

The thing is, the bleeding is still there, and it's been 7 days today since the scope. It was really bad when I had my last BM, just minutes ago. My stool is maroon, it has changed the color of my stool & is also coating the stool & even after I flushed, there was left over blood in the toilet. I NEVER had this much blood, even when I had ulcers in my colon 6 months ago.

It is starting to worry me.... Is it normal to have this much blood after a colonoscopy? I did call my GI & hope to hear back, but sometimes it takes them a long time to return calls, so I was hoping someone out there on this great board might have been through something similar....

The bleeding from your biopsies should have stopped by now. I'd definitely press those calls -- one standard warning after scopes is to report any significant bleeding, which yours appears to be.

Oh, no! I was worried about that... But she said I would have bleeding due to the deep biopsies... so I figured that was normal, but thought it should be done by now..... I hope there isn't something wrong....

Has anyone else had deep biopsies before? Just wondering what your bleeding was like. I have not heard back from the GI yet.

It all started with just blood that came out right after the scope. Then there was just a little blood coating the stool here & there. Today it was maroon stool & the blood was all over in and on it. (sorry, so gross). It just seemed like more than I ever had before & kinda freaked me out. I would have thought I would have stopped bleeding by now.

I wish I would get a call, but obviously not, the day is over & no call back. sad

Hi I haven';t had what you describe but if your really worried you could put a call into emerg. and see what they sat about it. Hope things get better for you soon. lol gail

I just called, they said it's just from the biopsies. I guess I will see if it's gone by Monday....

Well I don't think it is an ER crisis. Remember that a little blood always looks like a lot . . . but it is unusual for bleeding from biopsies to continue that long. It's certainly not life threatening to wait until Monday, but you will also want to watch for the more serious symptoms associated with a possible bowel perforation (fever, severe abdominal pain, rigid belly) and not wait on that if those occur. I'm also wondering if you might hav a clotting problem, as any wound, even within the bowel, should have clotted over and beguin to heal after this long.

I did hear back. I called & was told she thought it was just from the biopsies.

So I called back & asked how long I should expect this bleeding... When I did, the receptionist seemed very surprised that I was still bleeding. She was a different person than who I had spoke to earlier... "She said how long have you had rectal bleeding?" I told her just since the colonoscopy, 8 days ago. She was really surprised that I would still be bleeding. I told her it is getting worse & she seemed surprised by that as well. But the GI is out until Monday, so I won't hear anything back until then. But at least I heard something.

I don't think it's an ER emergency, either. I know it always looks like more blood than you think, but my stool is actually maroon with blood all throughout. I just haven't ever had that before....

Thanks for the tips on what to watch for. I am sure I will be fine, I just have to wait for it to heal, I guess...

I don't think abnormal bleeding is something you should ignore. I would go to the ER or Urgent Care. It couldn't hurt. I hate for you to take advice from non medical people who don't know for sure and it could be more or call the doctor on call. That will get their attention.
