Hital hernia Surgery before? Will it take longer to heal due to CD?

I recently had some bad symptoms with difficulty swallowing so I had a Upper Endoscopy. My Dr discovered a hiatal hernia (stomach pushed through into esophagus) and very red/inflamed stomach. He told me to take 2 Prilosec oTC a day and referred me to a surgeon and I have to get an Upper GI xray. I am not familiar with the surgery but am worried about recovery time and if it is worth all the recovery. I am overweight and could try to lose some but my Dr said it still may be there and surgery may be a good option.  I am on immune suppressing medication for my Crohn's so will it take longer to heal? I asked this on the Gerd board but no one responded. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks, karen

Hi Karen,

I have not had that surgery, but have had many others.  I can tell you Crohnwise, in my opinion, it seems to take me a little longer to recover than others.  I just had my knee scoped and my recovery took longer than expected.  We have such sensitive tummy's that I think sometimes we just need extra time to recover.  Good luck with your surgery.  I too have a hiatel hernia, but they have told me nothing needs to be done with it.

I had that surgery last june and i have felt so much better since.  my surgeon said it would take longer to heal than it would for the average person due to the drugs i was on.  but after the surgery he said i should be back up on my feet in less than a week, which is what happened.  the hardest part is the post-op diet.  liquids for a week, then pasta for a while.  i got really sick of ramen noodles and spaghetti.  the best of luck to you, i hope it helps!! :-)

Lusk, thanks for your message. it is good to hear more about this surgery. I have only been able to find the bad experiences so far and none of the good. Looks like some people heal quite well after the surgery. Karen
