I am sitting here in pain from gas that keeps getting worse everyday. I flared about 2 months ago and used Flagyl for about 4 days (has helped my gas in the past) for the gas but it seemed to just get worse. So I stopped the Flagyl and things seemed to get better, although I was anemic and started my 6MP again.

Last Thursday the gas came on big time again and started 20mg of prednisone but it just seems to be getting worse.

What are others experiences with using Flagyl for gas. Do you think I should give it a try again and give it at least a week? Something is going on because I'm even getting this horrible taste in my mouth when I burp.

My stools seem dark and tarry so I guess I'm bleeding some as well.

Are you starting and stopping these meds under your GI's guidance? I get the feeling that you are trying to "treat" yourself. Perhaps I misread your post, but that was the impression I got. You really need to see your doctor because your change and increase in symptoms needs to be assessed. The horrible taste in your mouth when you burp could be a sign of reflux disease which is often associated with CD. Also, if you are bleeding again, I would think they would want to check and make sure you aren't anemic.

Thanks Ides. You are partially right, I'm not the greatest patient. However, I did consult with my GI's nurse last time I stopped the Flagyl and she said to stop it and it doesn't get better to start the pred. Things seemed to calm down until last Thursday so I started the 20mg and still feel terrible. If I'm not better tomorrow I will call them and see what they say. They do know I'm anemic and I have a bloodwork appt next week. They said if my ferratin doesn't go up they will give me an iron infusion since the pills tear up my stomach even when I feel well.

Just wondering about people's success with Flagyl combating the gas. I really don't understand, it's like I've actuly gotten worse since I started the prednisone.

My under-educated opinion is that it might actually help any gas-related issues, since gas is caused by bacterial fermentation and the antibiotic properties of Flagyl would be essentially eliminating much of the bacteria...but it could be completely unrelated to the Flagyl too. I know that I have some side effects when I take Flagyl but gas isn't one of them. Has your doc ever tried you on Rifaximin, by any chance? Can you take over-the-counter simethicone (Gas-X)?

Hi. No never mentioned Rifaximin. Gas X does help somewhat. It's better than nothing but not ideal...

This Rifaximin seems like an interesting drug. I doubt my GI would go for it, but it's worth mentioning. My CD was so good for many years I'm abit out of the loop on the newer treatments. Thanks for mentioning it!
