Hey all,

I know there are some folks here that are being treated for AS.  I have been having some persistent lower back pain for about 3 1/2 weeks now with some additional pain in the hips, knees and shoulders.

This isn't debilitating pain, but it's more annoying and sleep depriving.  My question is for those who have AS, is the pain debilitating or annoying.  I wouldn't say my joints are "stiff" per se, just painful.  I'm having a blood test done for some of the markers for AS as soon as I can get to it.

Could some of the folks with AS respond with some insights?

Hey Poopington its good to hear from you again, only sorry you are hurting. I have not been diagnosed with AS YET, but I am seeing my Rheumy later this month to talk more about it. I too have alot pain in the same areas.

And mine acts much the same as yours. Its not debilitating, but it sure makes for rough nights and achy achy days. I know I am not much help, just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

Like most pain it starts out like you discribe and sneaks up on you. The sooner you start treating it the better.

My lower back/sacroileac pain started out as a nagging annoyance. I tried ignoring it for a long, long time. It got so bad that I was unable to sit down. I watched tv standing up, ate standing up, you get the picture. I finally had cortisone injected into my SI joint which worked great. I really had no idea how bad the pain had been until that injection took the pain away.

My lower back is stiff for about 30-45 minutes in the morning after I get out of bed. Then if loosens up and I am good unless I sit down for more then 20-30 minuted. Then my back will stiffen up again. My other joints also loosen up with activity. At times, my pain is much greater during the night because I am not moving about and everything stiffens up. Prior to going on Remicade, my husband would have to physically move me to the edge of the bed to get me out of it.

I like Ides go through the same with my lower back except that I can not move to get out of bed without assistance some days. Also some nights that all I can do is to lay still in one spot and not to move...any movement is so painful. But after getting up in the morning and moving it is better but it returns when my body stays stable.

Also you can have seronegative AS if your HLA-B27 blood test is negative with increased level with your CRP and ESR. So there are times it is hard to diagnose for people with CD.

Wow. 

That's just the kind of info I was looking for.  I'm definitely not that bad off yet.  I just came in from mowing the lawn and my back feels fine....but tomorrow morning will be a different story.

I would say the pain is predominantly in my back and hips.  Have any of you had any luck with physical therapy or a chiropractor?

Sometimes, life with CD is so wonderful, I just don't know what to do with myself.

My CD diagnosis started with a sudden episode of RLQ pain 11 years ago (just about this time of year, early June) My gyn told me it was either Crohn's disease or my back. (I laughed at both ideas because both of those areas worked great) They told me that L4-L5 on your spine refers pain to the front groin area Eventually the pain morphed into RLQ and right SI pain. Still thinking it was my back I went to a spinal doctor who is a DO. He did osteopathic manipulations which helped a lot with the back pain. Interestingly it also helped some with the RLQ pain but that did return.

When my problem flared in Jan 07 (by this time I had gi symptoms) when I had surgery I had back pain again . Whether or not this was colon pain referring to the back, or actual back inflammation that you get with CD, I don't know. The back pain has passed now that I no longer have much abdominal pain (since starting pentasa) but I know those manipulations really helped 11 years ago
