I was just wondering if anyone ever had white areas of stool. I had white stool mixed with light brown stool & I was just wondering if this is common? Anyone know what would cause it? Could it be from string cheese? That's the only thing I ate lately that would be whitish in color....

does it look like snot? If so, it is probably your intestinal mucous...

No, it's not mucus. I have mucus too, but have had that for a long time. This is white areas of stool. Just like stool, but white. I kinda dissected it, gross I know. But with all the confusion over what is going on with me, I wanted to make sure it wasn't parasites or eggs or something like that, which it wasn't. It's just like the rest of the stool, but white. I am hoping it's not pills not digesting again or maybe the string cheese? Is string cheese tough to digest?

well mucous can harden, but did you have a drink of barium recently?

Sometimes, Gall bladder problems can produce white stool. Just a suggestion!!

No, but that's what it kinda looked like – barium. It reminds me of what my stool looked like after my small bowel follow through, but that was back in February.

I have been having problems again, fighting my weight trying to stay/gain.... lots of pain. I have been having problems with things not digesting, but this is the first time I have seen this. Just wondering if anyone else had this before. I have been getting these stabbing pains that double me over as well. Not sure if it's related....

If mucus were to harden, would it look just like stool, mixed in with the stool? Just curious....

I've got that too. Since my colonoscopy last week. I started out pooping what looked like mucous and cottage cheese and now I've evolved to poop, mucous and cottage cheese. I'll mention it to my doc but I'm not real worried. I did have a lot of inflammation in my cecum so I assume thats where it comes from.

Well dont be confused, out of probably 10 colonscopies, (lost count really) only the first time and the last time it showed white patches, I saw it myself.  Depends on where your crohns is active, most times they dont see it. I was told that colonoscopies are not the best way.  I had one GI says I was fine and he couldnt see it, well...preping for that and a 1.5 hour drive and he does he own pain reliever for the scope, mild demerol (not enough) he tells me nothing is there but I have terrible pains???? Now that is confusing, I hear ya. sad

Well. I don't really know where I am at. I had two colonoscopies, the first one showed small ulcers and the last one was clear. Biopsies showed focal active colitis, but no granulomas or whatever, so the GI that did the last one said IBS. Got off prednisone & have been fighting it again, losing weight, although I found if I just eat like a horse I can maintain sometimes.... I have been having stuff not digesting & the pain is getting worse. I went to a new PCP & he said something was for sure wrong, just not sure what yet. More blood tests to see if something shows up... sent me to another osteo for OMT for my pain & she said it is related to my bowel problem & the pain won't go away until my bowel inflammation is fixed. So I am feeling like this may forever haunt me, without a dx... forever.... ugh. It's confusing & depressing.... and costly.

If you have taken barium then it could be the cause....but if not then I would suggest that you have a problem with your bile.  If it continues then I would mention it to your doc...if not then keep track of it and watch it.   I am not so sure that your doc will jump on it when you tell them if it only happens every once in a while....but if you can track it then they may.

My vote is problem with bile and possibly the gall bladder route combined. A gall bladder attack is sure to cause a white stool and a vicious sudden pain especially in the upper right quadrant under your ribs. Any vomiting or nausea when these pains hit? A bilerubin level (blood test) can tell the doctor if it's your gall bladder generally. I possess a lovely small gall bladder stone that likes to block my duct every now and then....not big enough or enough of them for surgery, yet.

White stool may also be an indication of liver problems. Unfortunately, the standard liver function tests don't usually show anything abnormal until significant liver disease exists, so please talk to your doctor about this. Could also be medication side-effects messing with your liver/digestion/pancreas.

Side effects of meds.... Right now I am only on lortab for pain (which helps keep my BMs to only 2-4 a day, the last doctor I went to said I would be going 10-12 if I wasn't on it) & Maxalt for migraines now & again, but I have been taking the Maxalt a lot lately. Migraines have been out of control. Would Maxalt & Lortab cause the white?

I did have a doctor's appt. this morning, but my doctor is sick & has cancelled. I already had one BM today & I had just a little of the white. I guess I will just track it & see if it continues. I have noticed it in every poo since Saturday.

Thanks so much everyone for posting. I was not sure where to go when this started happening. I know they say there are no granulomas in my biopsy, so I don't have crohn's, but I knew you all would post & be helpful anyway.

Last week they just ran a whole bunch of blood tests on me, (they took out 12 vials of blood) which I was hoping to get the results of today at my appt, but now I have to wait. I am so curious how they came out. Stool culture & tests, too. I wish I knew the results....

Oh snap!  What exactly should you say to the doctor, then?  What kind of stuff should you have him do, or look into, or check on?  I have the white poo also but it is a thin stripe on each side.  Every day.  I did tell him about it and he said since I am not having to go all the time, etc, we won't worry about it.

I don't have a gall bladder anymore so apparently it can't be from that?

You know guys, I look for blood and then I flush. I cant use the S word here but, dont you think we are looking too hard at this ( S ) sometimes. I mean, its dirty and it doesn't smell good, and we all have to do it, but do we have to stick our nose in it. If I have doubts about something I see, I am going to ask doc. If he wants too,,let HIM smell it, look at it under a microscope,,,he gets paid more to do that than I do. Anyway, if I have to play in the ( S ), I want more money...

huckleberrie, everytime I eat string cheese i have white in my stools...also sometimes if not chewed enough, solid white clumps. Scared me at first, but it happened again after eating string cheese so I am putting my 2cents in for that.

You are right. It just seems that they can't figure anything out on their own, so I have been paying attention to see if there is something they are missing. Until they give me a DX, Sniper, I am afraid I will be checking over my poo to make sure there is nothing that is missed. I keep hoping there is a clue that will help me get my life back, and my weight back! Otherwise, I might just wither away to nothing.... : (

Sometimes we can have mucous in our stools. Nothing to be too concerned with.
