PatientSpikers, TPN can be a real blessing. And, really, its not such a big deal. At least between, what 6PM and 8 AM? you are taking it easy and relaxing and getting sufficient rest. I was on it for 3 1/2 months and would do it again in a heartbeat w/o a qualm should I need it again.
Two mornings I just donned my backpack w/battery and kept morning appointments. Three evenings I just donned my backpack w/battery and attended grandkids functions at school.
However, I totally understand your frustration and worries about your blood sugar skyrocketing and the insulin recommendation.
I was on TPN via Apria w/the actual home health care sub-contracted to Genovia. I could call my Apria pharmacist at any time to discuss my "recipe" or any concerns I had about it. The Apria pharmacist was more "up" on my nutrition needs and problems than my gastro and she deferred to his suggestions tho she was the one who had to write the order. They drew blood and tested each week for my nutritional needs and any "recipe" changes that might be needed. Only one time did they have to send me a changed "recipe" mid-week when they got the blood results back.
Check your paperwork. In mine there was the phone number to call the Apria pharmacist direct. The pharmacist I had was just terrific! He was out of the Detroit area office. If I remember correctly (its been 4-5 years), his name was Marcus.
