Alternating diarrhea and constipation

I sometimes (like twice in a month) have alternating diarrhea and constipation.  For one day, I have liquid bowel movements 4-5 times in a day. I would generally take a small dose of anti-diarrhea medicine in that case.  Then I have no bowel movement in the following 2 days.  Everything comes back to normal after that.  3 or 4 weeks later, this alternating diarrhea/constipation may reappear again.  Is that a sign of bowel obstruction?

(1) I never throw up/vomit.

(2) I very rarely experience cramps and several admoninal pains.  Most are mild abdominal pain, which is releieved by passing gas.

(3) I sometimes can hear the noise (loud) in my stomach.

This alternating diarrhea/constipation is a sign of obstruction or IBS related?  Do you experience something similiar?

I was wondering about the alternation as well. Only mine is such that during one and the same BM I will have a solid stool and then it will switch to diarrhea a few minutes later. Kind of strange I think..I can't really say how or why it does that either. I share 1 and 3 on your list though I do suffer from some pretty terrible nausea during the severe abdominal pain. Let me know what you find out. It's been bothering me as well.

I experience a similar problem, pretty much all the time... Though, I tend to lean more towards constipation... I don't know what to tell you... I've had tests done and they don't show any obstructions... *And I am vommitting and hearing loud noises in my tummy*

You sound like a guy (the Paul thing), so... I'm guessing its not a female problem... *Which I think mine is... I need to have surgery done, anyway*

My stools typically change per bathroom use during the day. I will have a solid stool, then the next time it gets softer and softer but not to the point of diarrhea. But with each BM, the more pain and blood. I am starting new med and hoping that it helps.

Keep us updated on your condition.
