I've been dealing with pins and needles and numbness in my legs and arms for the last couple of months. I've had these symptoms episodically in the past, but now it seems like almost every night -- waking me up etc -- Since it has dawned on me -- duh! -- I realize that I have spots of numbness and or heightened sensitivity to touch (like a burn when a spot is touched) and lingering numbness in one of my toes etc. that are pretty much constant. The pins and needles, and pain are not constant, but at the same time when I experience them in the night, they don't get better when I change position -- except sometimes when I lay flat on my back without a pillow.
It has been years since I took flagyl and I'm only on azathioprine at the moment. I am not diabetic. I am reluctant to raise the issue with my GP because I don't want to cry wolf if this is just a pinched nerve or age. Any thoughts? Any experience with this?

A pinched nerve would likely be on only one extremity, not all of them. You may have B-12 deficiency which can cause this and is pretty common in Crohns from malsbsorption in the terminal ileum and cecum. Blood work will tell.

hey Bellenstein. I get this mostly when I am B12 deficient. I even have tingling around my mouth (which was the first place I felt the problems when I was on flagyl). The symptoms are even worse if I am low on potassium or dehydrated. I know I waited one day too many to do my B12 shot if I feel the tingling coming on.
I will say if it is focused in your toe/leg on one side only, I would also check for nerve compression. I permanently lost most of the feeling in my left leg and toe when I had a severe bulging disk that pushed on a nerve for a long time. A "pinched" nerve is not something to ignore.
I would check your blood work and check with your GP on your back just to make sure. you don't want it to be permanent-trust me!

YES!!! I woke up on Sat. of this last weekend and the second toe on my right foot and the middle toe on my left foot was numb. I thought maybe it was the way I slept. As the day wore on all of my toes became "numb" and the tips of my fingers as well. So when I woke up Sunday and they were a little worse and it hurt to walk I went up to the ER. The Dr says it is Neuropathy of some sort and I am now going to undergo some tests. I gave 8 vials of blood today and I also have to go and get an MRI done. He has put me on Gabapentin for now and it seems to take the edge off of the pain. They are testing to rule out Lupus, MS, among other things. I am having a really hard time with this and have had a few pity parties for myself. I have an undetermined IBD since last April '07, Gastritis dx in, May '08 and thenFibro and Chronic Fatigue in June '08. I don't want anymore!!!! I am understanding that it seems to be a common problem with people suffering from IBD's.
I would go in and get it checked out, the worst thing (and the best) is it is nothing.

Hi Belleenstein, I now have permanent neuropathy, due to very low levels of B12, so I know how you feel. My legs and the
whole of my bottom goes numb.... You would think, oh numb! that must be nice, but it's a hurt numb, very difficult to explain!!
I would ask your GP for a simple blood check.
Good luck

I don't think it is my b-12 I get monthly injections and my bloodwork is tested every two months. Electrolytes though, maybe I need to have that checked.
Thanks for the info and keep it coming.

belleenstein-
one thing you might want to have checked is Vasculitis. I had pain, tingling, and numbness in a hands, fingers, and toes about
two years ago. after months of neurology visits I was in getting remicade one day. when the nurse checked my blood pressure she couldn't get one. She said, thats funny, and did it again. Still not bp. So she switched arms, got a bp, and didn't say another word about
it. When i was at home that night complaining to my mom about
the pain and numbness in my arm i told her about
the lack of bp. She freaked and said call your dr. So i called the doc on call at my pcp and he said go to the ER now because you might have a blood clot. After 3 days in the hospital it was determined that i didn't have a clot but that I had Vasulities, which is exactly what it sounds like. Inflammation in the veins. My gastro said that because of my whacked immune system i developed inflammation in a vein in my upper R arm. They put me on some drug, i can't remember and I had to have an ultrasound done on my arm about
every month for a year to check it. I also had to be on warfarin. It can be dangerous if not taken care of. Didn't mean to make this so long, I just wanted to warn you.
Cheers

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, Belleenstein. I'd definitely tell the doctor, though: it could be something neurological.

Restlelss leg syndrome can also cause similar symptoms. Tho not as likely as some of the other possibilities. A cervical nerve could account for these sensations since they are also occuring in your arms.

hey bell...once a month B12 may not be enough so I would still have the blood checked. I was once a month for a very long time with an extra low dose, then I needed the full ml once a month. Now I get the tingling if I go over 2.5 weeks. Can't hurt to check it

Well the guessing goes on.....You have just described Fibromyalgia pain/numbness and tingling for me. Weirdess (if that is a word) experience I've ever had and I'm still learning. My guess is neurological of some sort too....try to talk with a Rhemy. How's the joints holding up?
