Hi everyone,

I'm a beginning runner with Crohn's. I'm looking to train to run a marathon (or half-marathon) with the beneficiary being a Crohn's organization. Any suggestions?

I'm also wondering if there are any other runners w/Crohn's out there...I find I feel sick sometimes after running and don't have enough energy. How do you get through this? I am also a celiac, so pasta and the like is out of the question.

I've been a runner since I was in college. I can't do it as much as I used to because of the Crohn's and it causing "accidents." But, I never notice feeling bad/sick afterward. Are there any energy bars that you can eat? Probably not... What about a Gluten Free nutrition drink to pack in some calories?

Good for you for training! I am so impressed and hope to hear about your race!

How about the ccfa for your beneficiary? Or healingwell?  Actually, the CCFA is sponsoring a half marathon right now to raise money for IBD.  I think it is called team challenge.  I'm trying to find a way to give you info about the event without breaking healingwell rules about fundraising.  I think this link is ok because it is about joining a team, not looking for donations:

They provide training and for some they provide travel and accomodations as well.

i actually just ran a 1/2 marathon this past sunday, unfortunately i hadnt been training much so it was pretty painful.
As with everything with this disease, everyone is different.
When i was first sick, less then a year ago & was feeling kind of crappy, short runs (4-5 miles max) def made me feel a little better. Possibly more just to get my mind off of being sick. Running has a lot of great psychological benefits!
Now that i am feeling better (thanks to remicade) it hasnt really been an issue, like i said i ran a 1/2 this past weekend w/out being prepared & i dont think it was any more painful then it would have been if i was healthy!

I would def recommend doing the race with team challenge, I think they even provide trainers in some cities & if you raise enough money travel & accomodations for the race.
im considering doing this next year, possibly in napa!
