Today was a horrible day!!! Sierra seemed to be doing so good. She had 2 bowel movements this morning that were just blood but they said that was normal and would get better each time. They were going to release her today if she was able to tolerate solid food for lunch. She was so excited to eat mashed potatoes! In the middle of eating she needed to use the restroom. Everything went down hill from there. She passed out in the bathroom and had lost a tremendous amount of blood. I heard her in there and it sounded like she was going to be sick, when I
opened the door.....it was just horrible. They had to give her a blood transfusion: 2 units of red blood cells. She was at a 6 and I guess, should've been between 10-12. They said she would go into shock if it went to 5 so she needed blood asap. We asked if my husband or I could give her blood but they said there wasn't time. They will test her again in 6 hrs to check her levels and decide if they have to add platelets. They aren't sure the cause but hope it was from the pain meds they were giving her Toradol (sp?). I guess they will know more after doing more tests. Her surgeon said he doesn't think he will have to operate again but he can't rule it out right now. I will keep ya's posted. Prayers needed! Much love to all of you!

Forgot to mention that she accepted the blood with no rejection which is good news. Her heart rate has went down too, it is fluctuating between 105-110 and it was up to 130 for quite awhile. I guess it should be 60-80. I am obviously staying the night and brought my laptop seeings I won't be sleeping!

Hi Was surprised to hear she had a bad go of it and sure hope that will start things on the way to getting better. I know that first taste of food is always something to look forward to . At least she wasn't home and thank goodness in the hospital when that happened. Is it normal for her to pass blood. ? lol gail

Oh, I am so sorry Sierra is suffering so. However, as was said previously, at least she was in the hospital when it happened.
I am glad that she is taking pain releivers. Children usually do not really tell people how much they hurt. I hope the tramadol was not the cause (it probably wasn't).
Hang in there Mom, I figured you would spend the night there with her.

Big hugs to you and gentle hugs to her!! I guess this is a lesson to all of us that if we know we are going in and want family blood to have them give before surgery!! My mom had knee surgery and had to give some of her own blood before hand. It was a planned surgery and she gave a month or so before I think. Don't worry about
the blood. It is so safe now. I'm sorry she had to go through that though. So traumatizing. Good thing you were there to alert
the nurses!

Thank you all so much! The surgeon was in this morning, her level went up to 7.8. He said it should've went up more after receiving 2 units of blood. They are going to test her levels again at noon. If they don't go up they will have to give her another transfusion. She seems to be in better spirits though. I'll check back soon! Lots of love to all of you!

Good news.......Her levels are increasing! Slowly but that is better than going down. They have been testing every 6 hrs and so far 2 tests have increased .2 each time. They believe she had been bleeding at a staple
location since surgery and the toradol was keeping her blood from clotting. She is showing improvement in all areas so she is headed in the right direction! Thank you all for everything, you all have been such a great support! Those of you that are approaching surgery, please be prepared. I know this is not a normal situation but it is better to be safe. Had we known we certainly would have prepared her for a transfusion. I know they say the blood is safe but now we will have that in our minds for some time. I wish the very best for all of you and will keep ya's posted!
