Excruciating abscess

Thanks for your reply.  My daughter has had blood work which seems to be fine.  She is working and doing quite well, except for the pain and discomfort from the abcess.  This week she was supposed to increase her Lialda, they put her on cipro for the infection and she's supposed to take something that's a yogurt in a pill (cultural????).  She'll probably have another drain put in when she goes back to the dr. in 2 weeks.  But it still concerns me that it won't heal.  She supposed to put pressure on it so the drain doesn't close up, when she does it like turning on a faucet.  Where does all this drainage come from?  They tell me it's the abcess, but how big must it be to produce so much.  Well we are playing the waiting game.  Dr. mentioned rem or hum but we really don't want to go that route if we don't have to.  As I said she feels fine except for this abcess.

iv just read bout the crohns pt mum n i had 2 stop 4 a min thn as i thought it was my mother writin about me bcuz my case is very similar..

i am 20 years old and havent bin wrkin since dec 2007, i was diognsed wiv CD in feb this year after a good year of tellin my doctor that i was goin to the toilet up 2 20 times a day.
Jan 2008: endoscopy camera to c wats was rong.
Feb 2008: diognosed with CD and put on 50mg azithroprine
March 2008: i had a flare up and was admitted to hospital 4 a week which i was put on a drip, started on 30mg of prednisolone steroids and given enemas to take home with me and use.
April 2008: appoinment with consultant azithroprine gone up to 150mg.
May2008: still feelin like im goin to the toilet alot missing goin out with my friends but thinking give it timee and the azithroprine will start working better.
June 2008: fever, not eating and not drinking 4 3 days, drowsy and not with it. admited straight to hospital on the thursday, had xrays dun, ct scan dun on the friday and consultant told me they c a shadow of an abcess, they would like to do an mri scan on monday. monday mri scan, tues results confirmed an abcess in my back passage surgeon wud b down to talk. (very confused still not to sure about the whole CD sinkin in still and no ideawat an abcess is) my mother was there 4 me 2 talk to surgeon as i had no idea wat was all goin on 2 much 2 take in, he was goin to drain the abcess off and put a congragated drain in 4 2 weeks, surgery hapened on the thursday went pretty well and i was aloud home the following wednesday. 2 weeks l8r the drain was removed.
July 2008: admited back into hospital another mri scan showed abcess had not gon down at all so another operation was made and this time i had a difrent drain in (thread actin as a drain not sure wat it called) this was 2 b removedf in 3 months.
August 2008: realised my m8s wernt really gd m8s as they havnt bin there 4 me at all year my mum has bin my rock dont no wat id do without her.
Septermber 2008: really depressed, had an mri scan done agen and a x-ray to c inside my small bowel.
October 2008: had an apoinment with my consultant results of xray bk my intestins r all tangled and matted very infected put on anti botics. 2 weeks later an appoinment with consultant and surgeon they hav results from mri scan and abcess still there(there was me finkin i was goin in 2 hav the drain out never considerd the abcess stil there) surgeon wantrs to perform another operation same 1 agen to drain it and put new 1 in bcuz the skin growin ariund the thread tryin to heal and close up. 31st oct had operation was meant to b a day case but few complications while i was under local anithetic so had 2 stay in over nite.
November 2008: this time round im not aloud bath which is rather annoying bcuz they really helpd the pain b4. i have an appoinment with my consultasnt next week 2 disccuss my next move (hes on bout the operation where he gives my bowel a break n attaches the bag)the surgeon wants 2 get rid of the abces b4 they mke a move on anything else buz he this the pus from the abcess would of sum how leaked through to cause thedamage in my small bowel which showed up as CD in as well.


atm im feeling like this is the worst year ever but i no deep down theres alot worse2 come im very depressed and if the doctor puts me on anti d it could cause upset not just with my bowel but my stomach as well. iv lost all my m8s bcuz they was never there 4 me and im not allowed to wrk cuz im on morphine and very light headed as well as the drrain stil givin me bad fever. not realy got appetite bk but drink lots.. does anybody no of anyfing that myt cheer me up and any light food i myt like 2 try?? i feel soo alone n just sit crying everyday wishin i was dead. i no im not the only 1 goin thru tjis n i shudnt b selfish its just its all hapned so quik and i feel like the doctors and nurses i see every week 4 my weekly bloods and chekup on my dressin 4 my abcess just try n fob me off.

Hi Sam,

My daughter has learned what she can eat by trial and error.  She was probably having the symptons of Crohns for months before her first hospitalization. For months before she couldn't drink coffee any more and she definitely stayed away from fast food.  After her initial hospital stay in July, 2007 where they just have her mega doses of anitbiotics, her appendix disentegrated and that infection and pus became infused with her intestines.  In the surgery in August, 2007, they removed that part of her intestines that was damaged and had to clean the rest because there was a mess.  But after the surgery she did very well until this abcess.  As long as the abcess is draining she feels fine, but when it backs up a bit she has excrucaiting pain.  She is still on cipro and doesn't take anything for pain.  After her last drain was put in she took ibuprophen and cried alot.  So I know the pain is bad.  Her next step may be another type of drain. 

I know of a young man that had to have the bag (colostomy) for a short time for his intestine to heal and it really was not bad at all.  After he was healed they reversed it. It may not be the worst thing you have gone through, especially if you are in a  great deal of pain.

My daughter still calls Mom every day and I go with her to her doctor appointments. Nothing wrong with that.
