You should have a skin test for it about
every 3 years.

Gail, are you referring to Tuberculosis? If so, the symptoms primarily affect the lungs, with a cough. The symptoms don't resemble Crohn's. Julie:)

You have to get a TB test to take a biologic, like Humira, enbrel, remicade. I also have to get regular tests for my job (i'm not at increased risk but others in my agency are and its one size fits all policy). They always give a little lecture about
it and I thought it can affect the entire body but its spread through the lungs. It used to be called wasting disease because people get so frail and cough so much when they are very sick with it. The nurse always says its treatable though.

I was told that if you're taking prednisone, don't bother with the TB test. It will come back negative even if you have it. I had a similar experience with Valley Fever. I got it because the prednisone weakened my immune system, but all the tests for it came back negative. They just treated me for it anyway because they were certain I had it. Once I was off the prednisone, I tested positive for the Valley Fever antibodies.

Gail, I never realized it could affect other parts of the body! I learn something new every day, lol!
I have to get a TB skin test every year because I work in a hospital. Blessings, Julie

Intestinal TB is much more common in the third world. As an interesting side-light, the treatment for that is something called bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). This has recently been proposed as a treatment for auto-immune diseases due to research that has shown a cure for diabetes in mice (Human trials ongoing). It would be a laugh if the third world has been curing Crohn's with an eighty year old medication that is really cheap by accidentally treating it as intestinal TB.

Hey Gail....I did not know about
the TB either and I have done a lot of research into things for my job. I had a TB test when I was in college for education. You could not start student teaching without getting tested. All that happened before I was diagnosed so I think it is sure I was not on pred when I had mine. I was just glad I passed another test in those days!
