Okay, what i really wanna know is, when ur really in remission does the abdomnial pain and bloating discomfort really go away for the most part? i have vicodin right now for the pain and tylenol 3...i only take maybe one a day when im having severe discomfort..tylenol doesnt do anything for me anymore..what im really worried about is if my doctors will prescribe me more once im all out...does anyone have problems with that? doctors denying them pain killers? im just so worried they're gonna think im a druggie! i feel like i have to hoard my pills cuz im so scared im gonna be in so much pain and have nothing to take cuz i ran out and my doctor wont give me anymore...are doctors really big jerks about that stuff???

Not really... I still have abdominal pain and bloating from time to time, and I'm considered to be in remission. Mainly it happens as gas pain or when I eat something that I shouldn't have eaten (live and learn, right?). I also have problems with joint pain. As for whether or not the doc will give you more, all you can really do is ask... some docs are more flexible about that than others. Tylenol helps most of the aches/pains that I have but sometimes takes a while to kick in and do anything.

Tylenol is a non-steroidal-anti-inflamatory drug (NSAID's for short). My GI says that NSAID's are a big no-no for my crohn's, and I think he's right. When I'm in pain, I get ultram. He only gives me 30 at a time, and requires me to check in with his nurse for refills, but he's never denied me a refill. Betsy's right - some docs can be more difficult than others, but most GI's know the pain must be dealt with. You have a right to a certain quality of life that should not involve large amounts of pain...it's nothing to feel guilty about. Set aside a few pills for an "emergency" and then make your doc refill those scripts.

Yes, it sounds like pain management is very much an individual thing... I'm not allowed to take aspirin b/c it can cause intestinal bleeding, and I try not to use the Tylenol too much although it does help if I take it. Quality of life is definitely an issue with Crohn's and your doctor should be active in your pain management and concerned about your well-being. Ask for what you need.

Tylenol is NOT an NSAID. Crohnie's have no OTC options except Tylenol. Asprin, Advil (ibuprophen), Exedrin, all of those are NSAIDS. Problem is, Tylenol usually doesn't cut for the pain.

I get my pain meds from my family doctor not my GI. I never have any problems getting refills.

I haven't had a flare since last spring but I do still have a considerable amount of pain. For me it's mostly joint pain... for some reason those bother me more than the gut pain. I have been trying to limit narcotic painkillers and my doctor gave me some Darvocet. It works pretty well- really helps me get a good nights sleep. Tylenol by itself is not terrible effective for me.

I do always keep a few of the "good stuff" vicodan on hand for those really bad days. Especially when my migraines come. I don't know which is worse some days the migraines or the crohn's. And I swear they are related because they both flare up at the same time.
