I feel like I have thousands of questions.  Thanks for all the responses I have received.  I sat down and looked at all the meds my daughter is taking and it just seems like so much.  She is just 15 and barely 100 pounds.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated:  Lialda, diclofenac (I think this is for the arthritis) prevacid, metronidazole, methlyprednisonlone (prednisone) and  a new one today---azathioprine???  Does anyone know what that last one is for.  She is currently in a flare (only her second---the first responded to prednisone but this one does not seem to be)  Does everyone with chrons take this much meds and do you think this will last a long time???   Thanks!

Azathioprine, aka Imuran, is an immunosuppressant.

You can find more information on most of these medicines by looking in the Crohn's Disease Resources thread, which is at the top of the forum. You might also find it helpful to look at the new meds thread, which I'll bump for you.

Don't be dismayed by the number of meds she's taking. It's quite common for us to be taking a lot of tablets.

It is a bit much sometimes to have to take all of that medication...I'm sorry to hear the prednisone is not working. My doctor had it given to me via IV for a week when the tablets lost their effect and immediately afterward they worked again so your daughter might just need a jump start so to speak..

I know it can sound scary. I hate it when a doctor wants me to list everything I take, it's hard for me to remember them all. Since in addition to the Crohn's meds I take blood pressure pills, birth control ect... I'm only 31, and my pill box is like I'm 80!

Yes we do take alot of pills, but they are for the best. Its better to keep the disease under control than letting it get out of control and trying to rein it back in. I just had a conversation yesterday with my GI and he said not only is modifying your diet important with this disease, its also very important to take your maintainence meds.

Also, I saw a quote recently that explained our medicines pretty good. It says steroids are like a nuclear bomb, they completely shut down the entire immune system and the Immune Suppressants and Biologics are like laser guided missiles and they take aim at quieting the disease. Hope that helps some.

im actually not on alot of pills...only 75mg of 6MP (thats one pill) and 5mg of prednisone (that makes 2 pills), but i'll be off of it for good on Tuesday :)...and of course my remicade treatments every 6 weeks...it looks like i may only have to get my remicade treatments and just take one pill a day, the 6mp, and thats it! it all really depends on what course of action ur doctor wants to take and what seems to be working.
