Is remicade an alternative to prednisone?

If remicade is an alternative to prednisone, I am really mad right now because when I was first diagnosed in January 2005, I was given 80mg to taper off of for like 99 days: 80mg for 10 days, 70mg for 10 days, etc. I got painfully bad acne from it. When I called my GI, he wanted me to stay on it. Now, I was put on it again, and I am wondering if it remicade could have just been given to me.

Whilst I have not used Remicade, I have been told that Pred is needed to start the fight against the Inflammation in the gut and to bring it under control. Then other drugs are introducted to keep the process going. But I am sure that one of the other guys will be able to answer this in more detail. However, I know what you are saying about the pred, they do not work for me at all.

It is comforting to hear that prednisone does not work for someone. Can you tell me what you use when you have flares and what you use when you are in remission?

I am very much new to this myself and still trying to figure it all out. They tried me on antibitotics to see if I had an ifection which i did not. They then gve me the pred and after 12 days, I have had no results and hurting even worse. However, I had started to liquid iet which i helping me really well at the moment. I am always doing a low rid diet in the hopes that that will help me. I am struggling with my BM at the moment, very little of them due to possible strictures. However, tropical jucie can be helpful there. Also, Stay away from fatty foods, surgar food, processed food, and beers/spirits.

I am sure that someone willo come along and give you some much needed advise before long, they are really good folk hear with alot of good sound knowledge.

Thanks for the response. It is good to talk with people on here who actually care. My doctor, for example, does not seem to care.

Anyway, could you tell me if you were diagnosed with UC and if you were, when it happened? I was diagnosed in 2005. i am going to write my tag in a few minutes that says what I am taking.

80 mg of prednisone is rough! I was on that dose a few weeks ago. Not as long as you were on it, but it is not fun!

My GI said he wanted me to get on Remicade and you can actually get information about Remicade sent out to you. I believe I did a search and found the website, it might be remicade.com. Anyhow, they send you information and a DVD about Remicade. I want to get on it because it DOES seem to be an alternative to prednisone, for some people. I am hoping I am one of them!

I started out on Pred (not that much thank god!) and Asacol...the Asacol made me worse, which is what led to me going on Remicade. Once I started that I did taper off the Pred, so it worked as an alternative for me. I now refuse to go back on it (my GI tried to put me on a ridiculous amount last time, even though I wasn't even flaring yet). Remicade does wonders for many people, so I'd at least try to pursue the subject more with your GI. Good luck!

Hi.

I actually called another GI office, and I was told the office uses remicade and acupuncture on patients. I have not ever read anything on here of people using acupuncture for UC.

Hi Nostra,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was DX with severe chrons disease, affecting mouth to anus. EXCELLENT news, huh? NOT! I am off to the GI on the 4th of december to hopfully get the full scope done this time as they could not get around the corners the last time.

NostraHistoria, i went through the same thing...i started on 40 mg of prednisone for 2 weeks and it didn't work...i heard if it's going to work it will work within a few days...i started on remicade when i had to be admitted to the hospital and was still on prednisone (up to 120 mg!) i am now sooooooo pissed at my GI for keeping me on it for so long and at high doses...i have a fat face from it, i'm still thin but feel puffy in my waist, arms, neck, and shoulders, and i went through so much pain coming off of it :( if i had to do it all over again i would have asked my dr. to taper me off from the 40mg of prednisone while in the hospital, but who knows if that would have been a stupid idea or not..they are the doctors and they "know best" lol..but i refuse to ever go on it again...remicade is helpful for people who don't respond to steroids or as like maintenance drug...good luck with everthing tho!! :)
