This is the first time posting on this site. although i've been around for 6 years reading and learning. and the info has been great. i've had crohns for about 6 years and mostly has not affected me. some minor flares with bleeding but controled with meds and no D. but now have had a bigger flare with lots of bleeding and the dreaded D i'm going about 7-8 times a day down from 15. the bleeding has come down after being in the hospital for 6 days. and am now at home. i have bleeding in the mornings but after 10:00am it goes away. i have a doctors appointment on monday and the doctor is most likely going to recomend remicade. i would like to avoid this if possible do to my job but i am not sure if thats wise or not. right now i'm on pred, asacol, imuran, with rowasa enemas at night. i dont feel like eating but force myself and have lost around 25lbs. any help with the D?

Going to the ER sounds like it would help more than an appointment in your case..I hope you get better VERY soon either way.

The er is for emergencies...and you have a drs apt. tomorrow....that is good. Why would you like to avoid remicade due to your job? You are obviously flaring despite the all of the drugs you are on. It sounds like it might be time to change your meds. I have been on remicade for 4 years now, and it has given me my life back. Welcome to hw!

went to doc today  and he likes what he sees and hears he has put off remicade for 2 weeks after having no blood for 36 hrs now unless things change. he put me on a anti fungal due to a past bout of the throat fungus. i still feel slugish and have no will to eat. but do feel better. as far as why i dont want to be on remicade i have a job where i can be calll away for months at a time and go into places that do not have any services to get it.

Hi SDoze & welcome to HW. I would suggest getting your dr to write a script for Lomotil and you can have up to 8 a day and no more. It helps me alot with D. ALso, Boost makes a great juice type drink called Breezes. These are great and will help you put the weight back on. You can go online and google it and find a place to order them from by the case. They are a little pricey, but well worth it. I hate those milky tasting things. I was put on these when in the hospital with a very bad flare. I keep them on hand due to eating difficulties. A friend of mine bought them for her Dad he has gained 13 pounds so far, drinks 3 a day. Her sister has leukemia and the now have her on them in the hospital. They are worth their weight in gold. Watch out about consuming too many Boosts or too much sugar in general; even mainstream doctors like Dr. Sartor (one of the editors of THE textbook on IBD) feels that sugar and other dietary components (iron, aluminum) may 'feed the bad bacteria' and thus aggravate the pathogenesis (in this case the inflammation of the intestine) of the disease.

sorry, the aluminum promotes intestinal immune responses, not feeds the bad bugs


Funny how diet, when we knew absolutely nothing about it (Hippocrates) was central to medicine, but now, in our one problem one pill day and age of medicine, diet has been put on the back burner for most GIs

update. i'm feeling much better no more D and no blood for more than a week. i feel i'm going the other way now and not going enough? eating more and gaining weigh even if its only a pound or two.
