Hi Since having my resection I have been pretty well pain free and having some mucus and going for a quick bit of pred, for 5 days to see if it helps get rid of it. I have been without bananas that seem to help me some. So will see how it goes I had surgery in Jan. to remove the TI about 10 inches. I was obstructing so was glad to get some relief. lol gail

Hi, my daughter had her appendix out along with that valve and a small amount of intestine.  She hasn't had any real problems but sometimes she does have D.  But she has learned what food causes it and pretty much stays away from it.  She certainly goes to the bathroom more than before but it hasn't been that bad - especially compared to this da__ abcess she has now.

ok, what the others have said is basically it. however, you sound like your asking 'why' , ok her it goes.. the ileocecal valve serves a couple of functions, one is to control the flow of waste into the colon., but the other i thinkl more important one is to control , actually to stop, the flow of colon contents into the small bowel. this being important because the bugs in the colon are differant than the bugs in the small bowel.. the 2 should never meet. so when the valve is removed, you lose the function of holding back waste thus giving you more frequent diarhea. also you lose the "backflow" function , leading to a increase is gas, bloating and diarhea as the bacteria in the colon spread into the small bowel. the same thing happens when you have aresection higher up in the small bowel. there are differant sections of bowel that do differant things, each part digesting differant parts of the food we eat, one for sugars, one for protiens, one for fats etc.. the resection of bowel cause these areas to be mostly or totaly removed thus throwing the digestive system into a state of disfunction. in time some people will adapt in the gut and largely resolve most of the issues. but the same mixing of gut bacteria will still happen causing problems such as gas, bloating, diarhea etc..

as for Vit D. not a big problem with the surgery your having. ask your dr to do an Vitamin assay before surgery and againg a few months after to see what your lacking...

Vit B12, is sometimes necessary because of the resectioning of the terminal ileum, or last part of the small intestine just before the ileocecal valve. this is the area that B12 is absorbed. when it is missing, oral supplements are pretty useless because they cannot be absorbed. so shots are given , usually monthly sometimes more or less often depending on simple bloodwork that your dr should be checking regularly. disease activity in this area can also cause a lack of absortion due to inflamation of the intestinal lining etc..
