I resently had a resection for Crohn's and in one of my followups with the surgeon was told to stay away from ibuprofen--that it might hasten a recurrance or something.

At my next visit with my gastro, (she didn't volunteer, to give her the benfit of the doubt I didn't wait till the end before asking), but she also confirmed a prohibition on taking ibuprofen.  This was the first I've heard.  Everyone else heard this and how long ago?

It can cause bleeding, kind of like aspirin. Stick to acetaminophen for aches and pains.

Yup. It's been told me as well. I also cannot take antibiotics. I can take Cipro and Flagyl (those are bacterial antibiotics), but I cannot take something such as ammoixcillin. I flare up EVERY time.

I don't think anyone officially "told" me for a while, but I definitely found out the hard way to avoid ibuprofen. It increased my bleeding when I was flaring, and just made my belly hurt in general... same for the naproxin stuff in Alieve... as well as baby aspirin. All have been no-no's for me for a long time, and I think that's pretty common with crohnies.

That being said, I know there's at least one other crohnie on the forum who takes ibuprofen everyday with no bad side effects. This topic came up when I was told I couldn't have NSAID's (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), and that I should try cutting out even the Tylenol. I'm probably a freakishly sensitive case though. Most crohnies seem to be able to take Tylenol without problems... and I used to be able to.

I'll see if I can find the link to the OTC painkiller, etc. discussion that we had a couple months ago.

What I don't understand is why so many doctors have a problem communicating this to CD patients. It seems like many people on this site have been surprised by this information. I know primary care, OB/Gyn and other docs don't seem to know it either. I've started listing it as an allergy just to be safe.

I also found out the hard way, but make sure all your Dr's know that Ibuprofen is a no-no. I know that sounds silly but I have been having nasty headaches due to a jaw injury and I was seeing my family Dr - he prescribed me something that led to major problems - well one of the ingredients was Ibuprofen - when I call my Dr he said "Oh - well I guess I need to put that in your chart - Really - no Ibuprofen, huh??" He even called my GI to confirm.

Yup that's correct, and that goes for all NSAIDS. I had a very sever bleed after taking aspirin for headaches. I can only take Tylenol now, and all my doctors have banned me from NSAIDS as well.

That was one of the first things my GI told me, but I was eating them for pain like they were candy. Still have found nothing that works as well on the old spondalitis joint pain.

My doctor told me that the only thing that I should take is tylenol, as the others could cause problems.

I was on a higher dose of Ibuprofen when I was in college and it gave me a bleeding ulcer. My reg doctor prescribed it for me. I was hospitalized for two days.

Okay...so here's something I'm curious about. I can't take aspirin and all the other pain relievers. I go to the ER and the doc there says I have a choice between bowels or liver. If I take the tylenol/acetaminophen then it can cause more damage to my already damaged liver or I can bleed using any other OTC pain relievers. So I take the tylenol and I had the WORST flare for two days of what I'm assuming was bile salt D. Since they took my gallbladder out, does that mean it was causing more harm to liver since it was producing more bile salt then normal? I wasn't eating anything different. Even had problems on two days of Ensure and Gatorade while using the Tylenol.

I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread but I was wondering if anyone had some insight. I forgot to mention it to my doctor when I did see him last week...although HE told me I was taking too much Tylenol. And again I wonder where to beat my head since what the HECK am I supposed to do? I hurt and ache and such all the time so what are my options? Tramadol was awful for me. Ahhhh well. I even tried the capsasin roll-on stuff.
