anyone have any experience wit massive bleed (2nd time for me).  i am getting conflicting advice as to whther i should have resection or go onto humira etc.   anyone have any succes on meds in dealing with massive bleeds and if so which ones.   is surgery maybe the best way to deal with it?  i am so confused.  i went to mt sinai and basically was given a choice.  have a contact in the cleveland clinic and they leaned more towards meds.  i know acute bleeding is rare with crohns so not much in terms of research as to most efffective outcome?  any advice?  thanx

I don't have experience with this and hopefully others will respond who do. I am wondering what other problems you are having. Did the docs tell you what was causing the bleeding? I know surgery is the last resort (because CD tends to come back at the surigical site) but at some point it becomes necessary (such as with a blockage). So you may want to try medications to see if the bleeding can be controlled that way. Do you feel comfortable sharing more about your condition?

Remember to call your doctor or go to the ER if you start to feel weak or faint from bleeding!! Hemoraging can be very serious. Hope you get clear answers soon!

Hi,
I have suffered for the last several years from acute GI bleeds. My first (and worst) event resulted in multiple resections as they were not able to stop the bleeding. since then I have had a couple of more events that have been stopped with bowel rest and steroids. Recently I have been put on Humira and to date (crossing fingers) I have not suffered any more acute bleeding in 10+ months. I will probably not know if the Humira is working until I have a year or more of decent remission. If your disease is such that you have acute, uncontrolable GI bleeds that do not respond to conventional treatment I would say you have little recourse but to either have surgery or try new meds such as Humira. Surely your GI can provide a good recommendation, but that's my experience anyway .
