I have a friend who is having some GI problems that are unusual. She had lots of blood & diarrhea this past summer. She would sit on the toilet & then get the dry heaves along with pain. She was taking a lot of NSAIDs for headaches. They did a scope & concluded it was due to the NSAIDs. She had a very large ulcer in her colon. She went off the NSAIDs & the bleeding stopped. But she has still had a few problems with gagging/dry heaves and diarrhea alternating with constipation periodically. No weight loss or blood or actual vomiting.

This last time she went to eat at Taco Bell, and then had urgency & D & dry heaves. It was not long after eating, but still did not vomit.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. I recommended keeping a food/symptom diary. Any ideas of what could cause this?

Err... the Crohn's? (A food/symptom diary would definitely be a good idea. For most Chronies, I'd say Taco Bell was a big no-no)...

Dry heaves suck... Maybe she should take something for nausea...

She doesn't have crohn's that we know of. I said she was a friend of mine, it's me they think has crohn's. But I wondered if this could also be crohn's or something of the like.

Isn't it weird to have dry heaves but have food in the stomach??

Not for me... I've had that happen on several occasions... *Hence why I know dry heaves suck, feels like if you could just get it out of your system, you'd feel better*

I don't know the 'whys' and all that... Perhaps she should see a GI again... Tell them that the problems haven't gone away even though she's off NSAIDs... I think it's odd that they wouldn't have noticed any "Crohn's activity" or anything like that since they did the scope...

BTW, I forgot to mention that this always happens when on the toilet. She also has a bad cough.

Weeeell. The only thing I can recall that was anywhere similar to your friends' experiences was when I was sick five years ago. First off, I would go to take a third/fourth bite of food and the smell would turn my stomach so I literally COULDN'T eat it. Also, I'd get dry heaves when I didn't eat all day...then I'd eat a piece of bread with honey on it and then I'd vomit all night long until I was dry heaving...or vomiting infected bile.

No.... not like that at all. No nausea except AFTER EATING & BEING ON THE TOILET. That's what is weird about it. It does not seem like normal nausea like I have had with my GI problems.... Just on the toilet after eating, but no vomit.

Again... I've had that happen to me, too... And again, don't know the reason for it.... (I'm feeling a lot better now, so I'm chalking it up to flare symptoms)

Seriously, though, since your friend is feeling so bad, she needs to go to a doctor. We can guess and whatnot all we like, but it's not going to change your friend's predicament until she goes to a doctor and gets treatment.
