Suffering from flu-like symptoms? Tired? Irritated eyes? Ticklish throat? Too tired to do anything?

As the regulars know, I've been pretty sick for the last six months or so (starting to recover now though) but have been continually bothered with flu-like symptoms. I noticed the symptoms were getting worse when I walked into certain rooms, so started investigating... and found huge piles of dust behind my bed, on top of my bookcases... all those hard-to-reach places that don't get thoroughly cleaned when we're ill.

Needless to say, I was horrified, and I have been trying to spend a few minutes wiping down those inaccessible areas whenever I have a bit of extra energy. I am noticing that I'm feeling a little bit better with every bit of dust I remove.

Anyway, I thought I'd mention it. Housework can slide when we're sick and tired... and, even if things look superficially clean, grime can mount in those hard-to-reach places and worsen our symptoms.

That's a very good point, Ivy, and may just serve as the motivation I need to get my butt in gear and dust tomorrow.

We just recently moved into a little house on a dirt road, and let me tall ya - with this stupid Colorado wind the dirt doesn't ever stay outside! I knew it was lurking and getting out of control, but you're right... it can't be making me or my husband feel any better.

I live in an old house and it seems like 5 minutes after I clean the dresser it's covered in dust again. I have a dust allergy and get monthly shots that really help.

Thanks Ivy. That makes me even happier that I just cleaned the bathroom. There was some mold getting ready to bloom in the shower.

Remember to clean out the logs & ashes from the wood burning fireplaces too! I can't sit in a room where the fire has gone out and the culprit lays in wait for me....all it takes is one good downdraft!

yeah Dust bunnies WILL inherit the Earth.
nono I know this, because they have already taken over my home. shocked
And right enough Ivy,generally in the winter months when the heating comes on, I suddenly find that I have skin rashes, wheezing, and general debility, and when I get around to hoovering (usually when the floor is crunchy shakehead) it immediately improves for a while.
The moral of the story for me is, don't be such a slob, sliding a book off a shelf doesn't count as dusting !
idea I think I need a woman. (Not to do the housework, to kick my a** until I do ! wink)

i just got the dyson DC-24 vacuum cleaner. this thing rules. it is all about the suction, not the brushes. as a test, i vacuumed with my old vacuum cleaner and then went over it with my dyson. it got a lot of stuff out and it wasnt carpet pieces. so i was impressed. and it has 2 washable HEPA filters which is one thing i was looking for in a vacuum. and it has some endorsement from allergy people or something like that (whatever). oh, and it is bagless which is cool. anyhoo, this might be worth checking out and possibly getting. they are expensive though, but then how often do you replace your vacuum and hopefully this is the last one you ever buy.

UGH - dust - I think my suburb must be the dustiest in Sydney. Good advice Ivy :)

It's quite incredible. I am (or so people say) a reasonably housekeeperly sort of person, and I do throw a duster over the obvious surfaces whenever I'm on the phone, so I thought things were basically hygienic here... but no. Some of my dust piles are *milimetres* high.
