Need Advice on Pregnancy and Crohn's

Hi all.  This is my first time on the site so I am getting the hang of things.  I could really use some advice on an issue I've been struggling with. 

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in March of 2007 - so it hasn't even been two years yet.  I went a year with no flares after getting the initial one under control but was on several drugs at one time or another - 6mp, pentasa, asacol, steroids...

I had another flare-up in March of last year...hurt like heck.  My doctor decided to put me on Humira.  I have been symptom free since then.  However, I am wanting to get pregnant and don't know what I should do about the Humira.  There's no proof it's safe, but I don't know what will happen to me or my baby if I have a flare up during pregnancy.  My doctor is into research and seems eager to put me on a registry for pregnant women on Humira so I fear his advice may be biased.    Any advice?

Yes there is at least one Mom, Stef17, who has recently had a Humira baby. Search through old posts and you can read about it. The general rule is that a healthy mom will have a healthy baby. Most complications come from flaring while pregnant or going into a pregnancy already in a flare. I just had my first. I was in remission before and stayed there. It was wonderful and she's perfect. I was only on Pentasa though.

Your doctor isn't biased just because he is into research. You should be glad he is into research! There are so many GIs that aren't or do not treat CD very much, so they aren't as equipped to treat CD or women with CD wanting to get pregnant. There is some great data out there on pregnancy and anti-tnf therapy. On the other hand, being on ANY medication goes against everything we think about being pregnant. No drugs equals healthy baby, right? Someone earlier mentioned a healthy mom equals a healthy baby. That is true. A flare is more dangerous to the baby than the medications you might be on (except Methotrexate).

This is a very personal decision and it will be hard--no matter what you decide! Just try not to stress your way into a flare.
