Newly diagnosed... Does anyone here also take Metformin/Glucophage?

Hello everyone,

I am a 43 years old female just diagnosed with Crohn's Disease after a small capsule endoscopy and colonoscopy. Fortunately, it's not severe, and I have apparently been living with it for quite some time.

I was wondering if anyone else here has been taking Metformin or Glucophage? Does anyone know if it worsens or contributes to Crohn's Diseases symptoms?

Welcome to the forum! Sorry you have this stupid disease! You will find folks here to be warm, friendly, and full of experience. I don't know anything about the drugs you mentioned. Maybe someone will come along soon who has some information for you.

Yes, I was taking Metformin and the side effects, at least for me, never did go away. The D was awful.My doctor said it would lessen as the meds got into my system, but after 30 days, they never did. I had D
at least 7-8 times after every dose. It was even worse when the dosage was stepped up. Of course,
as with any med, it is different for everyone. My doc finally switched me to Glucatrol,(sp.) and I seem
to tolerate that better. Again, what works for some may not have the same side effects for the next
person. Stick with it for a while and then ask the doctor for another med. Good luck.

Hi, I take Metformin and when I was taking 2000 mg a day the "d" was terrible. I thought that my Crohn's was flaring again. As I got my diabetes under control I was able to lessen my dosage. I'm down to 250mg a day and only have "d" a couple times a week.

I was prescribed Met for PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) JUST before I was dx with Crohn's. As soon as my RE (reproductive endocrinologist) found out I had Crohn's, he IMMEDIATELY took me off the Met as he said it was going to do more harm then good. The D never went away for me...

What ar eyou on Met for? Diabetes? PCOS? Something else? See if there is an alternative. You might need to go to an endocrinologist if you haven't already.

Kaycie: Yes, the Metformin is for PCOS. I wonder if there is any link between Crohn's and PCOS, or Crohn's and Metformin? I started Metformin just before I had my IVF in 2003. Stopped mid-way through pregnancy, then started again in 2006. That's when the Crohn's trouble started, although it took until last month to get diagnosed properly. I've been off the Metformin since May 2008, but my endocrinologist wants me to go back on it because my testosterone levels are rising again. I'm not so sure it's a good idea.

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of one of your twin daughters. What a heartbreaking experience. I conceived quadruplets during my first IVF cycle (they transferred 3 embryos due to my age, and one split into identical twins.) Sadly, my identical twin daughters passed away before they were born, but the fraternal boys were born alive at 32 weeks and are now 4-1/2 years old and doing very well.

We are actually considering another pregnancy... but I have been dragging my feet with all of my health concerns, and now time is running out for me.
