Why can't you take Advil?  that's my daughter's first choice for pain - dr hasn't told her not to take it.

its similar to aspirin.  it thins the blood and if you already have internal bleeding (which the majority of us have) it will exasperate the situation.  

Tylenol is the only OTC pain reliever allowed.

It will also cause you to flare badly. Never again will I use Motrin, Aleve or Aspirin.

No NSAIDs are allowed (which are found in aspirin, advil, alieve, ect) only Tylenol is considered safe, NSAIDs promote bleeding in the intestines and may exacerbate IBD symptoms.

I used Aleve for 3 days prior to hemmorhaging.  I lost 4 units of blood...  Doc said that the Aleve could have contributed.  (I am a bleeder anyway.)  I don't touch the stuff either.  It works, that I can say.  But, it's not worth the risk.  Since Tylenol doesn't help, I use Vicodin when the pain gets in the way of life.

thanks for all the info.  It sounds like she would be better off using the vicadin or percocet after surgery and forget the Advil--I'll let her know.

I realize that what I'm about to say bucks the trend, but I take advil. I take it a lot. I used to take Tylenol but it didn't help me. I even got these debilitating headaches and nothing would help. One day, i was so desperate for relief that i went to the medicine cabinet and said "f- it, i'll try advil". well, the migraines that would last for days that would keep me from going to work... GONE in 20 minutes! While I know that it isn't preferred, it is and has become a major option for me. Put another way, I now have a quality of life back that i didn't have before.

note: I never had headaches before Tysabri... but now i get them a couple of times a month. And now I take Advil.

I have used Advil and Aleve for years until I started Remicade 6 months ago. But now the Remicade seems to lose its effectivness in about 5 or 6 weeks. My arthritis flaired so bad after 6 weeks I called my GI and asked for more frequent infusions or a stronger dose and he seems uninterested in doing that. Last week I decided to take matters into my own hands and took one Aleve. The relief was amazing. I take one every 12 hours and will continue as long as needed. For me, Tylenol doesn't work at all. It's ironic that a $6 bottle of Aleve works as well or better for me than a $3000 infusion of Remicade.

I asked my daughter's GI dr today and he said she could take Advil.  he also recommended she take vicodin rather than percocet - it's more binding, when she needs it.

eyes  I am at #42 Tysabri doses. I am taking it for MS. I want to somehow reach Jid...we seem to have similiar problems with our Tysabri. I have Migraines, Hives on face after every infusion even after Benadryl and Tylenol. Loads of issues and really upset with "Being Stuck" on Tysabri without a way out. The longer someone is on it, the harder it is to stop. I am just wanting to talk with another person with significant experience. Thanks so much for allowing me to post my FIRST Tysabri info. May God continue to keep us all safe.

crohn's pt mom, just because she CAN take it doesn't mean she SHOULD. It might not make an immediate change in her symptoms, but it could do damage that isn't seen. I only take it when it's the only option (like for a fever that won't go down with tylenol) even though it doesn't change how I feel at all.

Just my opinion...

NSAID's can promote bleeding in the intestines which is why for IBDers it's considered risky to take them, once in a very blue moon could be okay but there's still a higher risk even on rare occassions of taking them.

Tylenol probably doesn't do much for joint pains and stuff like that because it's not an anti-inflammatory. At least I think, when I got my wisdom teeth out, they had me switch from Tylenol to Advil (this was before I was diagnosed) when the anti-inflammatory med where out because Tylenol doesn't have any in it. I may be wrong but that is what I remember.

And I recently learned the difference between Vicodin and Percocet is that Vicodin has more Tylenol in it then Percocet does.

My GI use to have me take 600mg of Advil a day for my joint pain (this is also the one who after reading my med tests i.e. ,my kidney stones ...he blamed that on the machine being faulty...and my sry I forget the type but the special CD MRI showing CD flaring badly still said I claimed to be in a flare)...needless to say 1 month later my perforation happened. I began seeing a new GI ( a CD specialist that time) and he told me not to take it. there are times still when tylenol wont help my headaches and I try every last thing (if it is a migraine i take my migraine meds tho) then I break down and will take 2 advil. I had to do this just yesterday and it also happened to be the 1st day in some time I didnt need my percoset. I maybe take advil a few times a year if that though knowing how serious it can cause things to be.

I did have 1 emergency doc on my college campus 1 time place me on aleve for joint pain (it was in my big toe) and that caused me to go into a major flare

I take Aleve for terrible headaches, and only once. If I take it for more than 3 doses my gastritis kicks up and I have to stop. I love NSAIDS for their magic powers at reducing inflammatory pain, but after watching my husband's great aunt almost die from a duodenal ulcer (attributed to long term NSAID use at her DR's direction!!) I treat them with great respect and avoid them if I can.

As long as my Crohn's is not bothering me I'm allowed to take NSAIDS for my other issues.

great, ibuprofen 400mg. is theonly thing along with vicodin helps with joint and muscle pain. I take them in conjunction with vic's. I can't tell if it has made me flare or not. it seems rem has kept the big flares a bay, but feels like someone has taken baseball bat to mt back. When I go to my shop to work, certain physical work feels good to stretch out my back, but when I'm doing something which requires upper arm strength, wow! my shoulders are like fire. It's my back, I feel it's from rem. my back was in good condition. I took ibu's to avoid taking so many vic's. I got out of bed this morning because my back was on fire. i figured I'll go on HW and see what I can find. Depressing thread, sorry. I don't know what to do now, any suggestions? It seems like I start to get comfortable after a couple of doses of pain med's. I'm bewildered. I know when I mix 2 ibu's and 2 vic's. really works well. I've been out of ibu for about a month, called yesterday to get phone in ibu's. i also called about pain managment, I need to get squared away with this pain, our art business after being slow for darn near two years, has awoken with authority, and in order for me to make money, man I need to get this crap under control. my dose of vic's is 5-500(low doseage). maybe if we increase that to 10mg and 1 ibu. I don't ever bleed internally, never have but the very early stages of cd 40 years ago, in fact I got 8 units of blood in 1970, and of course I got hep c. with those 8 units of blood. lucky for me I never drank.
