I do not have a family history of bowel problems but I was just diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis... I'm very interested since I have it in the left sided area of my colon, why is UC and Crohns always teamed up?! how related are they?!

Crohns is a positive thing, but UC is just the observation that the colon has ulcers and is inflamed...

honestly what's the difference between these two issues?

UC and CD are umbrella terms for IBD, they are both an inflammatory bowel diseases that differ some from one another. CD can affect the entrie GI tract from mouth to anus, UC is limited to the colon/rectom. With CD the inflammation can go through the many layers of the intestinal lining (often the cause of fistulas) with UC the inflammation remains on the surface of the lining only (often why fistulas are not involved with UC) fistulas are tunnels that can lead from an area in the intestinal tract to outside the body.

With CD there are skipped patterns of inflammation (healthy tissues in between inflammed) with UC the entire area will be inflammed, although the symptoms of both UC and CD tend to mimic one another with D, frequency, pain, urgency, excess gas and bloating, weight loss and incontinance...both also share the same extra intestinal manifestations, eye, skin, joint, bone issues and mouth sores.  Sometimes constipation can be an issue as well.

i have a 1st cousin w/ crohns-u.c. she wont take her meds like she should and has stopped eating,missing dr appts.constant complaining. i want to help ,but do not know what 2 do. i am very ill myself.it is an effort sometimes just listening.i rarelly leave the house, she does come 2 visit,i nag about the above probs,but it is like i am talking 2 the wall....help

     p.s she is also a alcoholic sad
