Flying and cant sit

I have posted recently on how I have had three surgeries, two of them emergenicies in the last three weeks.  As I am in school and living on my own it has  made it almost impossible to do anything or get better.  I plan on flying back home to my parents next week but am coming up with some difficulty.  I am currently in London, UK and home is Washington State, USA.  about a 14-19 hour flight.  Now I've done this flight before but i cant really sit at the moment let alone for that length of time.  People have mentioned how airlines should be able to provide some support.  If I could get upgraded I think I have a much better chance of making it home.  The only problem is the price.  So if anyone has any specifics on how to get the airlines to be any help to me let me know.

So glad you are going to be heading home! It will be so helpful for your healing to be around loved ones who support you. I realize it's a long flight, but like MMMNAVY said, the airlines have policies for situations like this. They HAVE to accomodate people with disabilities, according to ADA laws. Dreamer, this might be a loony suggestion, but might you be more comfortable if you sailed home? At least you'd have a bed and a private bathroom that way. I have no idea what transport costs over there, so maybe it would work out cheaper than an upgraded flight... but then, maybe it wouldn't.

My arthritic back makes sitting for any length of time [over an hour] impossible. We flew from Sea-Tac to Copenhagen and the flight was about 9-10 hours. I informed the airline about my difficulties sitting and got an aisle seat and permission to stand for 15 minutes every hour in the back near the galley.

If you tell them you have recently had surgery, I can almost guarantee you that they will require you to get a note from your doctor certifying you are well enough to travel. Also, if you tell them you can only lay down, they won't let you fly unless you get a wildly expensive medical flight.

As far as getting an upgrade to business or first class - notify everyone you and your parents know that you are looking for frequent flyer miles so you can upgrade to make your flight bearable.

I am so glad you are going home!! How I understand you situation! After my abscess sugeries, there was no way I could sit -- at all. It is hard for others to understand unless you have been there. No sitting on pillows or even a reclined chair unless it was totally flat. No sitting even for a fraction of a second. None. Going to doctor appointments were an incredible challenge because I would have to brace myself with my legs so that my butt was totally up and not touching the seat of the car. Couldn't do that for too many minutes until I had to stand. Couldn't stand for more than about 5 minutes either. It really sucked. What also sucked was that the doctor's office had regular chairs. I had to lay on the floor (they finally got a sofa).

I really think this is the right decision. So how to get you there. You need a medical flight or air ambulance. Have you called the Embassy?? They may say call the air ambulence and pay for it yourself but please plead hardship. They may know of charities who can help pay for the air ambulance. I looke at the Embassy's website and they do have links to sir ambulance and what airlines offer. Also, maybe your hospital may have ideas about how to get some or all of the cost paid for. I know this is really really hard, but please don't delay. You could get worse! Pay the money or take a loan from family and get yourself home ASAP!

How are you feeling now?? Are you able to eat? Are you keeping hydrated? How about infection -- do you have a fever? Praying for your helaing and quick flight home!!
