Do you know this food?? Juka(spelling??)

I went to a potluck party this weekend.  There was so much food I could not touch....HOT peppers, triple hot sausage, high wheat crackers.  They also made a marinated in beer, roasted on the grill turkey that was unbelievably good.  One guy brought "something my mother makes".  I never caught where he was originally from.  he said it was juka (spelling unknown but that is phonetic).  It looked like a boiled potato, but seemed to be a lot more fibrous.  It tasted good (OK the butter and garlic helped) and was trying to figure out if it was something new I could add to my food list without fibre issues.  I only tasted a little just in case---big party one bathroom

Hi ,from what i gather its spelt Yuca but is pronounced juka it is a root vegetable which is grown in dominican republic it starts out with a black skin which you peel and cook thats all i know but hope that helps a bit. Bev x [img]/community/emoticons/smile.gif[/img]

Yuca is also known as cassava or manioc. I ate it once in Panama, served as a "potato" in fastfood restaurants. Here in Taiwan, it's popular in "bubble tea," which unfortunately I can't drink (because of the tea - caffeine really sets off my diarrhea).
