B-12 only when anemic?

Are you only prescribed B-12 injections if you are anemic? My blood work never shows that I am anemic, but I always feel run down, especially since my bowel resection surgery about 3 years ago.  I have still have D at times, but nothing I'm not used to.

No, not me, I was told to supplement with B12 indefinitely in order to keep my levels at bay. B12 aids with nerve damage and if your levels fall too low then that can cause permanant nerve damage if it's not rectified in time.  Iron aids with enemia more so than B12.

I too was told after resection that I will need B-12 for the rest of my life.

No I take B12 shots because I had my TI removed in a resection. You should look into the sublingual B12. They work well for most. Good luck!

Hi i just begged my doc to have them as i felt i had no energy  had resections done in jan have the shot every 3 months Bevx

How much B12 are we talking about in an injection? I just had a resection and nobody told me this yet although I see My GI in June. Wonder if it makes a difference if you have lost some small bowel or colon?

I am not fatigued and have been getting bloodwork done every month.

I do get some B12 from vitamins but will check this out at my next doctor's visit.

Bammer, I was told that our bodies store nearly a 5 years supply of b-12. I didn't start my b-12 injections till about 4 years after my colectomy. Now I give myself a shot every month.

Do any of you have your blood tested for B12? I just looked back at some of my bloodwork and one test last year shows Vitamin B12 Result: 356   Reference Range: 155-800. Recent tests don't show B12. Just found this interesting.

I do a b-12 shot everyday. But I am chronically low.

So when they do your bloodwork they test you for B-12 levels? Does B-12 come in capsule form that I could try over the counter?

B-12 is very poorly absorbed when swallowed. It does come in a sublingual form (disolve it under your tongue) and yes you can buy it over the counter.
