Balloon Dilation?

I had a colon test done last week, my new g.i. doctor dilated my stricture what he could with a pediatric scope only, no balloon. I gotta say that I am feeling a whole lot better from that. He said that it dilated well, and wants to do another scope using a balloon to dilate the stricture again in a couple weeks.

I am still focused on strictureplasty, but that is going to take me a couple months at least to reach.

I am not nauseated much now, dilating this thing helped a great deal. Also I am sure now, this thing is the cause of my nausea.

Has anyone had a stricture dilated using a balloon?

Hi Homeboy,

I am happy to hear that your dilation worked well. I have an appointment with a doctor in September to see if they could one on me. I will be able to tell you after that whether it worked or if I am a candidate for it not. My gut feeling (pun intended :) is that nausea is related to your narrowing of lumen in your small bowels. When I get attacks, my nausea is bad, I am bad, bad....I usually end up in the hospital for a few days. Keep us posted about your progress.

The sad news is that my g.i. wants to do another scope, big fun I know. I even mentioned, hey, it's right by my rectum, a few inches, do I really have to prep for that? You know the answer already...

I am afraid of having a balloon put in there to dilate it, things can happen, but I may still do it, I dunno, depends how things go, depends if I start getting nausea again.

I am already exploring my options. Strictureplasty, or resection if no other option. No way am I going for colon tests every month or two, they are worse than surgery is I think.

I know where you are coming from with the nausea, it is BAD. It is bad enough, that dilating the stricture, going through the test, is well worth it. But I just can't accept the idea of going every month or two for a colon test, no way.

Good Luck to you, I think you will feel better after the procedure. I felt better the day after the procedure, I found myself eating breakfast, something I am still getting used to. I got up early today, not used to that either, but I just can't wait to get some IHOP pancakes, or maybe Waffle House.

Hi Homebody, from my understanding--a local doc here does these dilations regularly--he says that the procedure will take four hours long and I will have to go under general anaesthesia and may even require getting admitted to the hospital. My lumen has narrowed significantly and there are lesions in at least three locations in the small bowels. I am leaning towards eventually getting surgery done. We will see how this procedure works. Again very happy to here that dilation has worked in your case. Ha yes the colon preps are terrible thing...but we are glad that you are enjoying breakfast again.

I've been dialated by balloon several times and it is by far the easiest way to go. The opening in my J-pouch (I have a J-pouch) has always been small and I have been dialated many times with just the surgeons finger, without any anesthesia. Also there are instruments that range in size from 6MM to 18MM they can use to dialate an area close to the anus. I have a set myself.

I woulld gladly have dialations than resections.
