Hi all,
I am rather new to constipation, as my issues--until recently--have always been the opposite. This summer, however, I have been experiencing mild to moderate constipation on a regular basis. This past Monday, I had a horrible case of D and took two immodiums, which I haven't had to take more than once or twice in the past two years. Since Monday night, I've only had one small BM and the cramping and pain is getting worse. It's more uncomfortable than anything else, but I'd really like to be able to go. I started taking one Dulcolax a day three days ago and have added some chewable fiber tablets to my diet, but does anyone have other suggestions? Also, when should I become concerned about
not going? At this point, I'm certainly eating less than normal, but I do still have two small to medium-sized meals a day. I really don't like the idea of so much going in and nothing coming out.
Thanks!

Hi Vitak,
I am sorry to hear what you are going through..being constipated is not only physically painful..but emotionally it becomes all you can think about
..when will i go..why am i not going...my suggestion is for you to do a few things..i know you mentioned some of the things you are already taken..i personally feel like their isn't a fiber supplement in the world...like the fiber we get from our food...fiber one makes really yummy cereals and crunchy bars..their is like 9 grams of fiber in each serving..its also so important that you drink alot of water..that helps to push everything through..then i suggest you get some good reading material so you can have something to look at while you are on the toilet so you can concentrate on going...allow yourself the time you need to try to go..beans are also really good too.. a good bean burrito would also help to move things along...for me this might sound weird..but coffee or hot tea has always made me go to the bathroom every single time...i would try drinking hot tea herbal or coffee oh and cabbage also has alot of fiber as well...good luck..i am sure you will go soon..also a little vaseline on your bottom will help you push things out..once you get past the constipated part..things should go back to normal...

I use stool softners nightly to keep things softer and easier to pass. If I didn't use them, I would be in a world of hurt the next day. Hope that helps.

When I get like that it's usually because I'm having rectal inflammation.. I use Canasa suppositories and they work wonders! You may want to ask your doctor about
it.

Lots of water (even once you resolve your constipation issues) helps keep constipation at bay and it's essential since we tend to get dehydrated more easily usually due to D but keep in mind some crohnies are prone to constipation so taking a fibre supplement (as you mentioned you are doing) will likely have to be an indefinite thing as my GI suggested to me 5ish yrs ago and it's been very beneficial, fibre aids with D and C but it's key that you drink plenty of water with it as well.
A quicker resolve for your constipation issues you're having right now is prunes/prune juice.

I have just been reading about
factors that slow down peristalsis. Apart from pain (or the opioid pain killers used for pain) - quite able to cause C by itself - overloads of various dietary components can cause problems. Excess protein will cause slowed elimination due to receptors in the gut which detect unabsorbed protein and then slow down the peristalsis to allow for better absorption. The same is true of starches (or the sugars resulting from their digestion), but that happens in the colon so it is harder to identify. Excess fat also slows down the process, but that happens near the stomach and usually results in acid reflux (GERDs).
What to do? Eating smaller meals might work. So would "predigesting" your food: cook it well, mince or chop your food, use digestive enzymes and chew your food thoroughly. Fat seems to be a particularly effective inhibitor of peristalsis, so limiting fat intake at a single meal might be wise.
I was looking for this information to see if there were simple causes of SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) that could be handled at home. SIBO is a common result of Crohn's, so it might help your other symptoms as well.
