Having Strange Pain Any One With Ideas? Update

For the last few weeks I have had pretty severe pain on both my sides. It is right above my hip bone, under my ribs. No real fever, other than what I normally have. The pain was gradual at first and fleeting, but now it is pretty constant and much worse. When it started it was toward the front, but now it is more on my back, but it moves around during the day, which makes me think that it is maybe intestinal. But both sides is a bit weird. So that made me think kidney, I did go have a urinalysis yesterday just to rule out an infection, negative. Of course, the doctor didn't want to see me, just sent me to the lab. It is so bad that I can't sleep on my sides. And to top it all off, this is the week that my GP leaves to become a concierge doctor, so after 21 years with him I have to start over and try to explain my lovely complicated self to someone new. I just don't even know whether to call my GI, GYN, or new GP. So, anyone with a history of this type of pain, or any ideas?

Not sure what that pain could be other than maybe adhesion pain. But I would call your GI I think and run it by him.

Oh my that sounds awful!! I say make appointments with all three and explain the urgency with each request for an appointment. Thats how I was able to finally get the right care anyways. Best of luck you and hope the pain eases soon! The tests suck, to say the least, but you may have to repeat many of them with the new pain, hang in there hun!

Moves around? Sounds like both ends of the colon are involved. My anatomy is a bit sketchy... There is the ileocecal valve on the right side and the sigmoid colon on the left. It is a bit of a coincidence to have both sides sore at the same time - unless it is a referred nerve pain?? That is, some injury/pressure/inflammation of the nerve feeding both sides, presumably happening well above the sore point, possibly where it exits the spine. But then it moves about.... Is the pain worse at different times? Do you remember injuring your back recently? Have you changed your meds or diet? A new exercise plan? New TV/computer chair? Wild guesses is all I can come up with.

Do you still have your gall bladder?  If so, have you had it checked?

Hey Zanne...I second the gall bladder thought. My pain was mostly on the right side below rib radiating to the back. But, when the stones were in the right spot, I felt it across my gut and back.

The other thought I had was back strain. I have had some back issues and know that it would be from ribs to hips (I am very short waisted so that is a short area and sometimes hard to tell where the pain is really from).

Gallbladder is out. By moving, I mean when it started it was toward the front of my sides, now it is more on my back. But it is both sides which made me think kidneys, since I have 2. But I also thought maybe it was a back issue with pain radiating out. I have had so much bowel removed that my bowel anatomy is completely screwed up from when I was born and lord only knows where anything is any more. I was kind of inclined to think kidney stones but didn't know if you could have them on both sides at the same time. I haven't started any exercises, changed chairs or done anything differently. I may end up going to the walk in clinic if it doesn't go away by tomorrow since at the moment I don't really have a GP who knows anything about me. Thank you all for your ideas.

So I do have an infection. Not sure if it is Kidney or bladder, but it took 4 days for them to finally decide. The doctor's office called this morning and told me I needed to start the antibiotics ASAP. I was actually out of state watching a friends 2 year old while she was in labor ( I agreed to this weeks ago, or I would not have done it). I drove back home to pick up the medicine, and it hasn't been called in yet. 3 hours!!! How much of an emergency is it that I need to start it ASAP. Hopefully once I do start the medicine, the pain will subside and I can finally get some relief. Cause this is bad, and I am a CDer who can actually take pain pretty well. I go to work when I have complete blockages, but this has me not wanting to do anything. Thanks for your help everyone.

I still get pain where my gallbladder used to be. They did an ultrasound to see if there were any trapped stones in my ducts. Nope, just a bunch of scar tissue. They said no doubt that's probably what was hurting me.

I'm glad you figured out it was an infection though. I hope the antibiotics kick in real soon!
