Can anyone tell me about
their experiences with fistulas and surgery? What tests were done before hand, what type of surgeries are used, and what is the recovery like? Thank you.

Unfortunately, I can't help with your questions, but I was wondering how your surgery went almost a month ago? Did you have lots of pain with the abscess? How has the recovery been?

Former58D,
On a pain scale of 1 being no pain, 7 being birth to an 11 lb 10z boy and 10 being passing out from pain: it was a 9. The abscess did not look like the picutres in medscape or the mayo clinic. It looked like a long piece of tissue about
4" x 2" trying to force itself out of my skin. My pcp called colorectal surgeons for an hour to find someone he trusted . Don't let an er surgeon do abcess or fistula surgery. The surgery was great and I felt better almost immediately. I am sure the morphine had something to do with that! Recovery has been very up and down. The
opening isn't healing well and the drainage continues. I am extremely tired by about
3 pm but I try and exercise every morning. I tried going back to work but it caused a uc flare so I've been home for 3 weeks.

Ivy6,
Thank you for the great link. I can only take them a little at a time because I find a lot of the personal stories overwhelming. Have you ever seen anything about
the psychological stages of dealing with a chronic illness? I twould be great if there was something similiar to the death and dying stage guide. That guide helped my family through a bad crisis.
