Coffee Grounds look in stool

i had something that looked like coffee grounds in my stool tonight.why is that. Do I need to go to dr.? thanks, Julie

I think that can mean dried/old blood, probably from up high, like a bleeding stomach ulcer. Definitely check it out with your doctor!

I've had that too, it could be blood, it could also just be stool, it's amazing how with this disease the variations of stool that comes out of us...just like the variations of mucous.

It never hurts to see the doc, especially if this is something you'venever seen before.

i vote blood. i have hemorraghed 2 times with purple blood that required transfusions.. and twice with black coffee grounds looking blood. and it looks exactly as it sounds. no mistaking it. those were both bleeding ulcerations in my duodenum that had to be cauterized. the last one last sept. if you have another round of it i would call your urgent care center for a nursing consult. they will probably want to see you and at least do a CBC.

Coffee grounds is the classic description of blood higher up in the GI tract. Even if it stopped you should call your Dr.

I, too, had lots of coffee ground stool roughly a month in to started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which was supplemented by a few herbal remedies in an attempt to get my intestinal bacteria in balance. I kept testing for blood (there are home kits one can pick up in the pharmacy for $6-7 bucks) and never came up positive. I found a few sources on the internet that said coffee ground poop could be blood, but it can also be part of a die-off reaction to the bad bacteria in our guts.

thanks maregug. I have a G I dr. appt on thurs. I also have greasy stools.  which i know is a malabsorption issue.so I will mention both to him.
