In September there was a story on National Public Radio on proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium and how they seem to cause more heartburn so that it's difficult to get off of them. My daughter has Crohn's Disease and was automatically put on this drug when she was diagnosed. At one point she tried to get off of it but then experienced heartburn symptoms which she had not had before so she went back on it. What is the answer to this problem?

The same thing happens to me with omeprazole. I'll have really bad heartburn off of it, every day, that I had never had before, but then it goes away after a longer period of time away from the drug. Maybe she's just experiencing the initial drawback?

I had the same experience! I was put on Nexium before I was officially diagnosed (in January), and I tried to get off of it this summer and experieienced terrible heartburn when I had never once had it prior! So, I went back on it and now i'm afraid it will have to be forever. I didn't realize that was common...
