Celebrex/COX-2 inhibitors/joint pains

Hi folks

I've having problems with joint pains - CT scan showed sacroiliitis but I get really aching elbows and hands as well. I'm having an MRI scan in a couple of weeks time (not sure what this will look for) and hopefully might get a diagnosis as to what it might be ( I haven't been referred to a rheumatologist yet - gastro doc says its pretty much same treatment as Crohn's drugs-wise if arthritis). My gastro consultant has prescribed me Celebrex  - in the past I would have used Ibuprofen but since this is not allowed now he says COX-2 type next best thing. He wants me to consider Sulfazalazine but since my Crohn's (guts) is ok with mostly IBS symptoms (being managed by diet) I am reluctant to take anything else other than the Asacol I am now on as a maintenance med. The Celebrex eases some of the symptoms but not as well as Ibuprofen did and so I thought I'd sift through posts on this site to see what others have experienced- not many people appear to use Celebrex: is this because you are on stronger drugs for your Crohn's and/or arthritis, or is there something I should know about? I know some previous ones were taken off the market a few years ago but haven't seen any scary stuff about Celebrex.

Any views or advice welcome

I am not sure we are supposed to use Celebrex as it is a sorta like an Ibrufen type med and could cause bleeding in us. If I were you I would try the Sulfazine. Its a med in the same family as the Asacol and have heard if you can use Sulfa type drugs this is helpful for the joint pain. I am allergic to sulfa so I can't use it. Good luck!

Hi,

I did read the side effects of Celebrex and bleeding in the intestine is one of them. I think I would talk this over with my GI as you really don't need issues like this down the road. This med was just prescribed for my husband so I have been checking it out as I know it was discontinued about 5 years back in Canada for the side effects.

I used to take Celebrex and Mobic, for Joint pains etc. Switched to Mobic, about 10 years ago when things started coming out about side effects with Celebrex. Mobic worked wonderful.

But I just asked my Gastro Dr, about me taking either one again, and I just got the *LOOK* from him, as if to say, Um, do you want to make your Crohns worse????

When I had my 3rd treament of Remicade Sept 30th 2009, it basically attacked my joints and arthritis every where on my body, I couldn't even walk that night. So it was an amulance trip to the ER, My husband called the Er first and explained the side effects that I was having and that I had just gottne a treatment of Remicade that mornung. i've just been diagnosed with Crohns in the begining of Aug 09. so this is all new to me.

So now for pain that is every where still in my body, I take 1- 30mg tablet of Oxycodone every 4 hrs. I can only take them early in the am, and early afternoon, as they get me *wired* and if I take them to late I can't sleep.

So now late afternoon I take Vicodine 2-3 7.5 mg tablets then again at bed time. So this way my body is some what functionable.

The 3rd treatment of Remicade has really attacked my joints, nerves, muscles etc every where in my body with either pain or Tingly and numbness.

I'm just so afraid to try Celebrex or anything of the such, as I do not need anything ti further cause more problems with the Crohns.

My husband is on both Celebrex and Flexeril. Celbrex is 2 100mg pills a day, and the Flexeril is 1 10mg tablet 3 times a day. He takes them for his neck and shoulder problems. If he doesn't take them as he is supposed to, he will get a massive head ache.

you can read wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclooxygenase for COX. but as far as which enzyme is associated with COX 1 and COX2 they are different....
Thus by inhibiting COX (what you are doing is interferring with a particular enzyme). By inhibiting this enzyme you lose the bowel barrier prostagladin production especially for COX1. while some say the COX2 category is lesser evil it is actually a different enzyme that you are interferring with, and the 'result' from selectivity gives different side effects. I think it would be a good question for the doctor and to receive a more informed response beyond the "look". After all, there is no lesser evil if you inhibit any enzyme from performing a task for the sake of pain relief.

Iwas on celebrex for 6 years with no problems. Its was a miracle drug for me until it was taken off the market for a short while. It is easier on your stomach than ibuprophen.

DFBDAR do you have Crohns? The reason I ask is Ibruprofen like meds are not allowed for us Crohnies and they can cause bleeding. Ibruprofen triggered one of my worst flares.

Hi Penny,

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 2006. I had already had post surgical arthritis for some years and had been taking aspirin for it. After getting Crohn's I discovered for myself on the internet that aspirin and the other NSAIDs were a bad idea. My Primary Care Physician (PCP) put me on Celebrex with the knowledge of my GI and so far it has helped without causing any problems.

Keep in mind that we all react differently to meds so the same may not be true for you.

I only take it when I really need it now and it could start causing me problems at any time, so if you find something that helps your arthritis without hurting your guts, please let me know.
