Recovering from Surgery

On Oct. 22nd I had a small bowel resection.  The doctor removed a small section of my terminal ileum, along with the flap between the large and small intestine and a section of the large intestine.  The section removed was quite ulcered and she was able to remove all signs of my Crohn's disease.  I spent 11 days in the hospital recovering, a bit longer than I had wanted.  I developed a wound infection in hospital, so they had to remove some of the staples, so now I have an open wound.  Extra-mural nurses come daily to my home and clean and repack the wound.  I am starting to feel better, but this surgery certainly took a lot out of me. 

I was just wondering if anyone else who has had this surgery can let me know recovery time, etc.  I am still pretty sore, and my bowels are still not functioning properly.  I went 11 days after surgery before my first bowel movement and have been quite constipated since then.  Althoug yesterday I was greeted with a bout of dirahhea.

Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

It took me about 10 days to have a bowel movement after surgery.  AFter getting to go home from the hospital it was very painful to have a bowel movement. It took me a good week before it didn't bring tears to my eyes. It took me a good month before I was somewhat regualr.

Hi Ann,

I just had my first bowel resection on Monday. I had 10cm of my terminal ileum removed along w/a small part of my cecum.  I came home on Friday.

I can only imagine how you feel!  I have a very small D movement daily and I thought that was abnormal! Plus I keep thinking I am going to burst my staples.

((Hugs)) I thought it was uncomfortable for me and that I had problems!

Hi Ann,

Did you have your surgery by laproscopy or the full open? I had the full open for both of my resections and I got an infection in my incision both times. I think because of that my recovery was longer than most. I was in the hospital 10 days for both of mine, and out of work for 8 weeks because of the open incision. Take your time and rest up. I was in pain longer than most too I think and I had to depend on my pain meds a little more. Try to walk a little bit everyday to help build up your strength and to help your bowels to wake up. I had explosive diarrhea for awhile but that improved as my bowels adjusted to all the changes. Try to keep your diet pretty bland for a bit until every thing settles. Also, be sure to stay on maintainence meds as you don't want to have a repeat surgery. I did not take meds after my first resection and I wound up having to have another 3 years later. Good luck and I hope this leads to a long remission.
